What We Think

"Not just one tube, but two! This microphone is something else and you realize it immediately after removing it from it's flight case. It delivers a 47ish sound with a modern twist. It sounds spectacular on both male and female vocals! It even delivers when recording acoustic instruments. So if you're seeking unparalleled warmth with the right amount of detail, I'd seriously consider the Oceanus."

The Lauten Oceanus is truly a work of art - not only in appearance but most importantly, in the way that it sounds. Just to hold it in your hand leaves a big impression. Time after time my clients are always blown away by the impressive form factor of the Oceanus. Moreover, all the accessories feel solid as well. From the shock mount to the included flight case, it’s clear that a lot of care and consideration went into the entire package.

This mic’s secret is its relatively unique dual tube design which really gives it a special sound. It is warm, smooth, but surprisingly articulate as well. If I know that the material is calling for a 47-ish sound, but I want more of a modern twist, then the Oceanus is my clear choice. On a male vocal, the mid range is super smooth and almost enhanced, but it doesn’t end there. This mic’s warm, present sound lends itself perfectly to female vocalists as well as being surprisingly good on acoustic guitar, drum overheads, and various other acoustic instruments.

Although the Oceanus has proven itself to be very versatile, It’s not what I would consider a “desert island” tube LDC. By that I mean it has a specific sound that slants more toward the vintage vibe and that sound may not be ideal for all applications. Recording a modern pop vocal? Give the Miktek CV4 a try or a Peluso P12. All in all the Oceanus’s price point (under 2k!), impressive appearance and unique sound have solidified its place in my mic locker as a flavor that I cannot be without!

LDC Tube Shootout on Small and Large Body Acoustic Guitars

This blind shootout focuses on four of our favorite large diaphragm tube mics, the Lauten Oceanus, CharterOak SA538B, Peluso P12, and the Miktek CV4. First we'll hear them on a small body guitar using a finger style technique, then we switch it up to showcase how they sound using a flat pick technique on a large body guitar. All four of these mics were run through our Vintech 573 preamps and Apogee Symphony converter. If you want to know which mic is which and/or want to get the full length high resolution files for yourself, send us a quick email at mics@soundpure.com. Additionall all four of these mics are available for SoundPure's unique Try-Before-You-Buy program, so if you would like to hear how one of these mics will sound in your studio with your gear, give us a call and we'd be happy to talk more with you. If you like what you hear, check out this gear at SoundPure.com or give us a call anytime at 919.682.5552. Thanks for watching

Manufacturer's Description from Lauten

Clear the air for big revealing sound. Visually stunning, the LT-381 Oceanus is a fantastic vocal mic. It's an original high-performance transformer-less tube condenser microphone that produces full and detailed recordings.

Our new 31.25mm dual-diaphragm capsule captures minute details of the sound source. With the unique circuit topology and body design you will notice increased clarity as well as subtle tube character. Being a transformer-less mic it also minimizes feedback and signal loss, while the unique signal path eliminates the harshness often associated with transformer-less mics.

The LT-381 Oceanus features a variable polar pattern selector allowing you to choose omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-8 as well as six intermediate positions. This variable pattern selector provides the ability to achieve many variations of sound characteristics. The rugged vintage style external power supply houses the polar pattern selector and supplies a consistent voltage to the microphone to achieve optimal performance. There are two features designed to reduce vibrations and noise. First, the capsule is internally shock mounted. Second, each microphone has a custom heavy-duty shock mount that securely holds the microphone and reduces external vibrations and noise.

Internally the LT-381 Oceanus is a innovative blend of classic and modern day components. This microphone features our new 31.25mm dual-diaphragm capsule designed to capture minute detail. It also contains one of the most unique circuit topologies of any microphone on the market today. It utilizes a NOS military-grade pentode tube with a carefully selected operating point as the input and gain stage, and a transformer-less tube output stage. Finally, our unique vacuum tube isolation chamber reduces component temperatures as well as noise.

Lauten Audio

About Manufacturer

Based in California, Lauten Audio was founded almost a decade ago by Brian Loudenslager, who saw a need for well thought-out mics with a unique character. Working in collaboration with Grammy nominated engineer and producer Mike Terry and theoretical physicist Dr. Charles Chen, Brian started working on the Horizon, which they wanted to be a unique-sounding work-horse studio microphone. Two years later the Horizon was introduced. 8 years later, Lauten Audio has become known as a leader in original-sounding microphones with unique timbre, and has garnered a loyal following. Lauten audio does not clone classic or vintage microphones, and instead starts with a clean slate to bring you a truly original product.
