What We Think

It doesn’t take more than a single listen to hear and understand why the CV4 has earned its reputation as being one of the best sounding LDC tube mics to emerge within the last decade. We’re fully aware of how loaded that statement is, but quite frankly this is one of those microphones you have to hear and experience first hand to fully take in.

The CV4 is a modern tube LDC mic with a polished, mix-ready tonality and an incredibly smooth transient response. Its tube warmth adds just the right amount of harmonic richness and fullness without becoming overbearing, causing it to be more flexible on a wider range of different voices and instruments than some of the more colored alternatives.

While the CV4 performs wonderfully on acoustic guitar, piano, and bowed string instruments, I found its greatest strength to be on both male and female vocals. There it delivered a clear and controlled mid-range, tight bottom-end, and an open and shimmering top-end that required little to no effort to fit into the mix.

As a very smooth large diaphragm tube condenser, its result on instruments is a very lush and large sound. This can be excellent for more pushed back rhythm tracks, but may be a hair too smooth for more articulate lead or finger style performances that you may want to sit more forward in the mix. For those scenarios the extra detail found in the Peluso 22 251 or even Miktek’s CV3 would provide more cut and articulation to benefit those playing styles while still providing that pleasing LDC tube richness and polish.

In this video we put 4 LDC tube microphones from the 2K price point up against eachother on female vocals: the Pearlman TM1, the Miktek CV4, the Peluso P-67, and the Telefunken AR-51. Can you tell which is which? Joining us for this shootout are Ayisa Adderley (vocals) and Caige Crampshee (guitar) from the band Eyes Eat Suns. Check them out at http://eyeseatsuns.band/

Manufacturer's Description from Miktek

The Miktek CV4 is a large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone offering nine pick-up patterns. The CV4’s sound is truly large and produces a musical response that will please artists, producers and most seasoned engineers a like. The bottom end is big, warm and tight, with mids that are present and even, along with a high frequency response that’s sweet and airy. The CV4 is ideal for recording single vocalists, and perfect for acoustic instruments, groups of vocals, piano, string ensembles, winds, overheads on a drum kit or as ambient room mics.

The CV4 utilizes the MK9 capsule developed by Miktek.

This unique capsule features dual 1-inch diaphragms manufactured using 5-micron Mylar with a 0.4-micron layer of evaporated gold, which is precisely tensioned, mounted to carefully-tuned backplates, and set back-to-back to create the final capsule. Tight tolerances and special attention to precise machining of the backplate produce a linear off-axis response that ensures the accuracy of the microphone.

The heart and soul of the CV4’s head amplifier is the AMI BT4 transformer, which offers a classic sound and an extended low frequency response found in the earliest versions of the most famous vintage tube microphones. Together with an original NOS (new-old-stock) Telefunken EF800 tube, in which the high-voltage circuit has been uniquely implemented, the microphone challenges the performance of the best-in-class industry standards without hesitation.

The Miktek CV4 is hand-built using components from the US, Europe and Asia, and is tested and packaged in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Each microphone includes its serialized frequency response graph created during final testing.

The CV4 is packaged with its swivel mount in a wooden box, which is set inside an aluminum case with the included power supply unit, 7-pin XLR cable and shock mount.
