This is a tutorial on how to mic a jazz archtop guitar and amplifier to get the best possible sound. Learn professional microphone placement techniques from pro audio engineers. While the traditional technique involves simply placing a single microphone a guitar cabinet, our engineers, elaborate on the technique in the recording studio to produce a much more pleasing sound, more like what you would hear from a jazz guitar if you were listening to it acoustically in Using a Royer 122v (the tube version of their classic Royer 121 mic) and a Sennheiser e609 dynamic microphone on a Jazz Amp 112ER, and a Schoeps CMC6 with supercardioid MK41 (CMC641) capsule to mic the guitar. We demonstrate different mixing and panning choices to get different sounds from several different mixes of this excellent 3 mic setup on some fabulous sounding archtop guitars from Eastman, including their John Pisano model, as well as an incredibly Bill Comins acoustic archtop jazz guitar.

The McPherson 4.0XP is an acoustic guitar made with a Redwood top and Madagascar Rosewood back and sides. This powerhouse guitar offers warmth and richness, pronounced in the lower-mids, yet still produces a lot of volume and an overall balanced warm tone. The Madagascar Rosewood is about as close as you can get to the old Brazilian Rosewood. The XP, or extra presence option, is a slightly enlarged sound hole. The Eastman AC720 is a gorgeous dreadnought guitar and the most popular model from Eastman. This classic 28 style dread is hand made and individually voiced. The Sony C800g PAC is one of the most well-respected microphones in the world that is actually in current production... it is also one of the most expensive. John Peluso, of Peluso Microphone Labs created the VTB (Vacuum Tube Bottle), with the sound of the C800g in mind. While they are not exactly the same, they do have some striking similarities, and we wanted to put them to the challenge in this vocal microphone shootout and microphone comparison test. We tracked both mics through an Avalon AD2022 on an amazing vocalist, Jeanne Jolly. One thing is for sure, we liked the sound of the VTB a lot, particularly given its $1,500 price tag, but, there's clearly very little bad to be said about the great sound of the legendary Sony C800g that continues to be a favorite choice on pop and hip-hop vocal recordings, all over the world. The AD2022 is Avalon's fourth generation of fully discrete, symmetrical Pure Class A microphone preamplifiers. The dual mono AD2022 includes the original sonic capabilities and transparency of the M2, M22 and M5 preamplifiers plus several additional features, including selectable microphone source loading for optimized cable/mic matching, improved high-voltage Class A regulated power supplies, two high Z instrument inputs, variable-passive high pass filter, quality/silver wiring and doubled plated circuit boards for superior low level signal transfer.

MICROPHONE INPUT
The AD2022 incorporates the most advanced high-performance microphone transformer available. Split low-ratio primary windings are carefully combined within a custom mu-metal core for extended smooth frequency response and very low distortion. Sealer silver relays are used for minimal signal invasion. The input signal selector, high pass filter, polarity-phase reverse, +48v power and the 20dB input attenuator all utilize local sealed relay operation. A variable passive high pass filter provides a minimum phase shift design while eliminating low frequency rumble, wind noise and mechanical vibration at sub sonic frequencies.
SYMMETRICAL PURE CLASS A DESIGN
Two 100% discrete, high-voltage, symmetrical Pure Class A signal amplifiers are utilized per channel. The first operates in a cascaded-cascode FET configuration while the second stage amplifier is fully bipolar. The twin amplifiers share the total available gain requirement. This shared architecture increases the high level headroom capability, improves transient response and doubles the internal bandwidth of the ultra-high performance pure Class A signal amplifiers.
OUTPUT and METERING
High-current DC coupled, Class A discrete amplifiers are utilized for the output drive interface with +36dB capability into all known loads. Two large, high-quality analog VU meters indicate accurate signal readings while bi-color LED's offers peak indication at 0dB and +20dB.
