How to Record Grand Piano -- Earthworks PM40 PianoMic

http://www.soundpure.com/p/earthworks...The Earthworks PM40 Piano Mic system is the easiest way to achieve a world class piano recording whether or not the piano lid is up or down. Whether you are recording a Yamaha C7, or a Steinway Grand Piano, or any other grand piano, it will provide you the sound and tone of the instrument that you put in front of it with dazzling accuracy. It has incredible detail, and exhibits no proximity effect, even when positioned directly over the strings, regardless of the positioning of the lid. You can have outstanding isolation from other instruments with the lid down, even in live concert piano performance, but the Earthworks PianoMic system can also deliver audiophile quality piano recordings in studios, with the lid up. Because of the neutral and natural sound of these microphones they also take wonderfully well to any kind of preamp coloration, EQ, compression, or Reverb that you want to throw at it. Call us at Sound Pure to order yours today, or discuss how it works, 888-528-9703.

Manufacturer's Description from Earthworks

The PianoMic™ System was designed to revolutionize piano miking and achieve an incredible improvement in piano sound for live and recording applications with no mic stands or booms. There is more gain before feedback, significantly less leakage from surrounding instruments and the same pristine sound quality with the piano lid either up or down. At the heart of the system are two Random Incidence, omnidirectional, 40 kHz High Definition Microphones™. With a frequency response of 4 Hz to 40 kHz, the mics deliver extraordinary impulse response and extremely short diaphragm setting times. In addition, the microphones exhibit no proximity effect, regardless of their distance from the piano strings or soundboard. The mics, when positioned close to the sound source, also provide incredible gain before feedback.

Features:

  • The original PianoMic™ System and winner of the 2008 TEC Award for Microphone Technology/Recording
  • Cannot be seen from outside of the piano (needs no stands or mic booms)
  • Superb sound with the piano lid either up or down
  • Virtually no leakage from sounds outside the piano
  • Incredible gain before feedback
  • Recording studios can now record piano with other instruments in the same room
  • They will handle high sound pressure levels with high rejection of sounds to the rear of the microphone
  • Incredible gain before feedback
  • Quick, Simple and Easy Setup
  • 40kHz Random Incidence Omnis
  • Hear the full range of the piano including the high and low strings with no hot spots
  • The telescoping bar allows the PianoMic™ to be quickly and easily installed in nearly all grand pianos and to place the microphones close to or away from the dampers and get the exact sound desired

About Manufacturer

Earthworks was formed by David Blackmer, the inventor of dbx, to realize his vision of upgrading the entire audio chain to a new standard of sonic realism. David's goal of creating high definition tools with which to capture the sound and experience of "being there" is based upon a strong evidence that there is more to human hearing than the range of frequencies which can be heard as tones. We are convinced that audio equipment with extended frequency response and faster, cleaner time domain performance will yield more life-like results. Traditional audio methadology appears to be based on working around the limitations, imperfections, and personality quirks of the equipment, and calling the ones you like "assets". WE believe that any part of the audio chain can be improved to the point where the standard is so high that any product meeting it will be indistinguishable from any other product meeting the same standard, and that an audio system built to such standard can achieve sonic reality. This standard, for electronic equipment, is met by our Zero Distortion Technology. We support the concept of recording acoustic events accurately enough to capture the sound as it happened in the room. This approah allows you to make sonic coloration and texture choices later, when you can consider them carefully and still have recourse. Life-like accuracy is the best starting point for whatever unique coloration you may wish to add.
