Sound Pure's Take

2013 Steinway & Sons Model B – New York – Satin Ebony

Serial Number: 595911

There is something especially compelling about a Steinway that has been meticulously preserved while benefiting from years of thoughtful musical refinement. This exceptional 2013 New York Model B represents precisely that opportunity.

A single-owner instrument since new, this piano has spent its entire life in a carefully climate- and humidity-controlled private residence, protected from direct sunlight and subjected to remarkably little playing time. Never used for teaching, institutional performance, or daily practice, it has been played only occasionally and carefully by accomplished musicians. Its condition is simply extraordinary.

What makes this Steinway particularly special is its continuous care under legendary piano technician Marc Wienert. For more than a decade, Marc has overseen its tuning, voicing, regulation, and musical development. Unlike a new piano whose hammers and action may require years of settling and refinement, this instrument has already benefited from that process, without accumulating the wear normally associated with thirteen years of use.

Perhaps most remarkable is its extraordinary tuning stability. Throughout its residential life, the piano maintained its tuning so consistently that service often required little more than occasional unison touch-ups, sometimes only seasonally. This exceptional stability speaks to the instrument's careful preservation, consistent environment, and quality of ongoing maintenance.

Musically, this is a breathtaking Steinway. At pianissimo, its voice is extraordinarily warm, intimate, and dark, with remarkable clarity and control. As the pianist increases intensity, the sound transforms organically, becoming progressively brighter, more focused, and brilliantly powerful at fortissimo. This extraordinary range of tonal color, shaped naturally by the pianist's touch, is one of the defining characteristics of a truly great Steinway Model B.

For anyone considering a new Steinway, this instrument deserves serious attention. It combines the immaculate condition and exceptionally light use of a nearly new piano with the maturity, stability, and musical refinement developed through years of expert stewardship. In our view, that is an exceptionally compelling combination.

From Steinway & Sons

Why the Steinway & Sons Model B?

Steinway has long referred to the Model B as its Classic Grand, and among pianists it is often called "the perfect piano." At just under seven feet in length, it strikes an exceptional balance between concert-level musical capability and proportions suitable for recording studios, recital venues, and private homes. Its versatility has made it one of the most sought-after models in Steinway's history.

Unlike the larger Model D concert grand, the Model B offers extraordinary tonal depth while fitting comfortably into spaces where intimacy and clarity are equally important. For decades it has been the preferred choice of countless recording studios, universities, conservatories, and discerning private owners because it combines concert-quality performance with remarkable responsiveness across virtually every style of music.

Sound Pure Pro Audio Expert, Todd Atlas, briefly discusses the more general sonic characteristics of Small Diaphragm and Large Diaphragm Condenser microphones. For this comparison we chose our Miktek C5 SDC and C7 LDC microphones and our incredible sounding Steinway Grand Piano. Being a Small Diaphragm Condenser, the C5 recordings showcase more transient detail, articulation, and an overall tighter sound. With it's larger capsule size, the C7 Large Diaphragm Condenser added more warmth and roundness to the piano (especially in the low-end) and smoothed out some of the transient attack of the strings. While every mic has it's own unique voice and response, these broader characteristics and differences can be found in all Large and Small Diaphragm Condenser microphones. If you're having difficulty hearing the differences feel free to email us at mics[at]soundpure.com for the full length hi-res audio files to compare for yourself. Both the Miktek C5 and C7 mics are available for Sound Pure's free try-before-you-buy demo program. If you'd like to se
