SDC Mic Shootout on Acoustic Guitar: M60 vs. 2011A vs. P84 vs. C42

In this video comparison, we put four small diaphragm condenser microphones to the test, as we demonstrate the TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik M60, the DPA 2011A, the Josephson C42, and the Peluso P84. Can you tell which one's which?

Manufacturer's Description from TELEFUNKEN

With over a year and half of development and beta testing with top recording engineers, the newly designed M60 FET (Field Effect Transistor) small diaphragm microphone is TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik's first non-vacuum tube, FET-based solid-state condenser microphone. The M60 FET Series is designed to utilize the same interchangeable TK6x capsules as the TEC Award-winning ELA M 260 small diaphragm tube microphone.

The M60 FET MASTER SET features one M60 amplifier paired with three interchangeable capsules including the TK60 cardioid, TK61 omni-directional and TK62 hyper-cardioid.

The frequency response of the TK60 cardioid is flat from 150 Hz to 7 kHz, with a smooth, airy presence peak at 8 kHz, making it ideal for drum overheads, hi-hat and ride cymbals, piano, acoustic guitar, and other acoustic instruments.
The TK61 features a 6-micron gold-sputtered membrane measuring 15mm in diameter, and offers a large, open sound perfect for capturing the ambience and vibe of your instrument or recording environment to breathe life into any recording. The frequency response is flat from 20 Hz to 5 kHz, with a smooth, airy presence peak at 8 kHz.

The tightened and focused polar pattern of the TK62 hyper-cardioid is great for use on cymbals, percussion, and as a stereo pair for live performance recording. Its frequency response is flat from 150 Hz to 3 kHz, with a dip at 6 kHz and a smooth, airy presence peak at 8 kHz.
The M60 FET amplifier utilizing a unique proprietary circuit topology produces an exceptional transient response and SPL handling capabilities. Carefully selected and tested components are hand-plugged into gold-plated circuit board traces to provide an ultra-clean true Class A discrete amplifier with a frequency response of +/- 2dB from 20 Hz to 50 kHz. The output is matched with a custom American-made transformer that offers an especially low self-noise and a typical THD+N of 0.015% or better, making it ideal for critical recording applications.

The M60 FET's incredibly quick transient response captures nuances and subtleties with impressive precision and clarity. This results in an extremely detailed sonic image with definition and presence, perfectly suited for the complex character of stringed instruments and percussive sources.

The M60 FET amplifier body is finished in a durable, lightly textured black powder coat adorned with the historic TELEFUNKEN diamond badge. The microphone's XLR connector shell complements the look with a matte black nickel plated finish engraved with the model and serial number. The TK6x capsules feature a bright nickel plated enclosure with a fine gold mesh pattern.

The M60 FET MASTER SET ships complete with TK60 cardioid, TK61 omni-directional and TK62 hyper-cardioid capsules, an SGMC-5R 5-meter XLR cable with right angle female connector, M761 elastic shock mount, and foam windscreen, all packed in an FC61 zipper carrying case.

About Manufacturer

The current TELEFUNKEN | USA company acquired the TELEFUNKEN Trademark for North America in 2001. Recreating the classic TELEFUNKEN microphones has been a labor of love for the company CEO, Toni Fishman and the pursuit of that dream has culminated in the manufacture of what we at TELEFUNKEN | USA believe are the finest microphones currently available in the world today. Along with meticulously manufacturing historic replicas of classic microphones by hand in the USA, TELEFUNKEN | USA is now marketing the R-F-T series of microphones that take advantage of the globalization of technology, in order to offer recording microphones with professional sonic performance at reasonable prices. Our latest additions to the TELEFUNKEN | USA product line include a revolutionary ribbon microphone, an exceptional dynamic microphone, and a vacuum tube replacement for the original TELEFUNKEN VF14 that offers comparable performance in our U47 and new U48 microphones. TELEFUNKEN | USA continues to expand, and research and development of new products is an ongoing process. Although based firmly on classic designs, TELEFUNKEN | USA is continuously looking forward. Important changes in our company and further expansion of our product line are slated for the immediate future.
