Sound Pure's Take

Vintage drum sets always grab our attention when they come to the shop, but this 1970’s Sonor set was an immediate head-turner. Sonor became famous for their classic Beech shells, and this set puts out that vintage tone with a wonderfully smooth and even response. The stunning Blue Onyx wrap on these drums wowed us with its sleek appearance, as well as its physical condition. For a kit of these age, we were very impressed by the condition it has been kept in. The bass drum does show more apparent signs of wear than either tom, with some puckering and splitting of the wrap here and there; one notable repair can be seen adjacent to the tom mounting bracket where the previous owner re-glued the wrap. The hardware of the drums is in overall good condition, with light pitting observable on the lugs and hoops. Good-condition kits can be hard to come by these days, so don’t miss out on this piece of drum history!

From Sonor Drums

Only when sound is becoming a real experience, the SONOR quality standard is met. From precision craftsmanship, musical expression is shaped.

For decades SONOR has supported the constant improvement of percussion instruments on a scientific level. The close cooperation with research institutes, renowned musicologists, and leading artists build the basis for these efforts. Several groundbreaking developments were made possible by these mutual activities. An example is the optimization of the resonance properties of drum shells. In the area of mallet instruments, vibraphones, metallophones and glockenspiels SONOR has introduced major improvements in quality standards. Also concert and marching percussion instruments have seen considerable further developments.

SONOR drums and hardware receive top results almost regularly from test reports in leading drum and percussion magazines. As a first in musical instruments, SONOR received the highest design award of Germany in 1994. But always one key element remains through all certificates and achievements: The dedication of SONOR to offer sound the best possible basis.
