The Mendel Octave Mandolin is a beautifully voiced instrument that delivers warmth, depth, and impressive clarity across its extended range. Its spruce top provides strong articulation and responsiveness, while the rosewood back and sides add richness, sustain, and a focused low end. The longer scale and octave tuning give it a full, resonant character that works well for melodic lines, accompaniment, and folk-inspired textures. An ebony fingerboard and adjustable ebony bridge provide a smooth, comfortable playing feel. Balanced, woody, and highly expressive, this octave mandolin offers a rich voice with plenty of presence.
The octave mandolin occupies a sonic space between a guitar and a mandolin, it combines the punch of the mandolin with the sustain and range of a guitar. I used elements of both instruments in the design of my octave mandolins. I used the body shape of A-model mandolin and the induced arch and x-bracing found in most “flat-topped” guitars. The result is a pleasing full tone with plenty of volume. There are many wood options available for tops, back & sides, and neck. I have built them with Sitka and Adirondack tops, both with excellent results. I’ve used granadillo, black walnut, mahogany, padauk, rosewood, tzalam and maple with excellent results. All impart flavor of their own to the tone.
