What We Think

With so many microphone builders poring over technical drawings and schematics of 50-year-old Neumann and AKG condenser designs, David Josephson is constantly pushing the envelope rather than regurgitating. The C617 is a prime example of this effort. A far cry from the KM84s, C28s, or KM54s of yesteryear, the C617 delivers a clarity, depth, and level of definition that feels supernatural, yet more musical than other hyper-clean SDC options. Most notable to the C617 is the mic body, designed to be powered by 48V phantom, but capable of applying a mind-blowing 200V to the capsule.

Manufacturer's Description from Josephson

The Josephson C617 is the second generation of our high voltage metal diaphragm omnidirectional microphone, suitable for the most critical sound recording and measurement applications. It operates from standard P48 phantom power yet provides full 200 volt polarize potential for a lab grade standard "half inch" microphone capsule. The C617SET is supplied with a Microtech Gefell MK221 capsule. The dynamic range is dependent on the inherent noise of the microphone capsule and the limits of P48 phantom power. The Josephson cascode FET front end circuitry introduced in the C606 is further refined in the C617, combined with our traditional balanced bipolar class-A symmetrical output stage.

For music recording, the Josephson balanced symmetrical circuitry together with a sub- micron thickness metal diaphragm capsule translate to the purest, most open sound possible. Pickup of sound pressure alone results in no proximity effect, very low sensitivity to wind noise, and phase accuracy that cannot be obtained with directional microphones. Spot-miking applications or overall stereo pickups using spaced pairs take on a new level of detail and precision not possible with other types. The small capsule size results in a nearly perfect omnidirectional pattern for accurate pickup of the whole acoustic environment.

About Manufacturer

Josephson Engineering makes a wide range of fine condenser microphones for studio, stage and field sound pickup, and audio instrumentation. The company began in San Jose, California in 1988 and moved to Santa Cruz in 2000. This is our 20th year of producing microphones. In the process of developing our own mics, we've come up with special technologies that let us realize designs that weren't possible in classic mics of years past. This means that the expert user has a wider range of sound choices, without many of the compromises of older designs. Besides our own production, we also supply microphone capsules to several other mic manufacturers that become the mics for their most demanding customers. All of our business is individual -- we use select local dealers who bring our product directly to critical users around the world. We have a standard product line that covers many applications, but if there's a microphone you need that we don't make, we'll either tell you about the best one we know of for that job, or make it for you ourselves. We won't tell you that one of our mics is good for everything -- there's no such thing. Josephson also provides electro-acoustical engineering, design and manufacturing services for challenging requirements in many industries, specializing in microphone transducers and supporting systems. Our OEM capabilities have allowed several companies to excel in their own markets, using capsules made by Josephson.
