From IGS Audio
The legacy
The design principles of the EQM500 Midrange draw upon the legendary passive equalizer developed during the golden age of professional audio equipment in the United States in the 1950s. Like the Pultec EQ, co-founded by Eugene Shenk in 1953, the EQM500 embraces the principles of simplicity and superior sound quality—traits that have stood the test of time.
Construction
The EQM500 is assembled as a monophonic unit in a 500-series chassis. The front panel is equipped with three sections of knobs, providing control over three key frequency bands: LOW, MID, and HIGH. For the LOW and HIGH bands (six frequencies each), you can select the boost frequencies, while for the MID band (twelve frequencies), you can choose the attenuation frequency. Each of the three bands is a highly precise LC resonant circuit, utilizing inductors from UTM Industry, manufactured with 1% tolerance. English Grayhill switches are used for frequency selection. The input and output of the equalizer are transformer-balanced, also using UTM transformers.
The usage
The EQM500 offers an extended range of midrange frequency control, from 200Hz to 7kHz. Due to the characteristics of human hearing, this range contains the most energy in audio material. This type of filter is ideal for removing resonances in the mix, caused by poorly sounding recording rooms or overlapping frequencies from nearby instruments. The LOW and HIGH filters can add „body” to the audio in a highly musical way while enhancing its presence.
