The idea was simple - with so many cool vintage guitars to replicate, where does one begin? Well, let's get the customers to tell us! At any given moment in time the Custom Shop is "crowd sourcing" new models for future production. Some make it, while others don't. Some are home runs that earn the right to take a permanent spot in the Custom Shop lineup.
The Custom Shop Series captures the excitement of those quirky and cool guitars of the past. Many of the models have more knobs and switches than NASA, yet are gig-ready instruments that you can count on as your every day workhorse.
In 1991 the world got its first look at the Surfcaster. Geared towards not just the "surf" crowd, but also the country players, it featured a flamed maple top, dual lipstick pickups and a dive bombing tremolo system on the 6-string version. We feel 25 years is long enough so we brought back an Eastwood tribute to this wonderful guitar.
Michael Robinson, the founder of Eastwood, started out buying and selling rare electric guitars. The difficulty and cost in obtaining these instruments, along with what he calls the all-too-often "sketchy quality that played like crap" led him to start a company building his own revivals from the edges of rock history. Eastwood has reinvented models and even worked with existing luthiers such as Jeff Senn to bring iconic and unique instruments to a wider player base. The result is a wide variety of instruments with a visual and sonic aesthetic all their own, coupled with an improved and smooth playability derived from modern build techniques. Each instrument is factory-milled and then hand-assembled and inspected by a seasoned pro in Chicago or Liverpool. Eastwood-playing artists include Warren Ellis, Jack White, Bill Nelson, Nick Valensi, and more! Since 2014, Eastwood also has a custom shop where they crowd-source new models for future production.
