The Caroline Guitar Company's Wave Cannon MKII is a recreation of their original Wave Cannon distortion/overdrive pedal. This reiteration has a few tweaks aside from the obvious aesthetic changes. Firstly - the havoc toggle has been changed to a footswitch to be easily engaged and disengaged for those of us brave enough to tackle that feature. Engaging the havoc switch unleashes a barrage of feedback and power that can be easily pitch-shifted or manipulated by your guitar's volume knob. This may honestly be one of the coolest features I've seen on a distortion pedal, but be warned - not for the faint of heart!
The color of the distortion itself is capable of everything from a gentle break up to full-on beastly ferocity. In the words of Caroline themselves, "...is capable of going from cranked, lightly dirty amp tones to the sound of a furry Godzilla devouring a junkyard full of broken a/c window units." A distortion that's thick and saturated, wooly and punchy and able to nail just about any drive sound you can think of - sounds like the MKII is a winner to us.
So, what IS the story on Wave Cannon® version 2.0, or as we’ve decided to call it, the Wave Cannon MKII Superdistorter? The long story short is that this thing is an unrepentant, unapologetic distortion pedal that is totally nasty and fun. This Cannon comes pre-loaded with balls (pun alert!) and is capable of going from cranked, lightly dirty amp tones to the sound of a furry Godzilla devouring a junkyard full of broken a/c window units.
It’s different than the original, which was based on the classic ’70s fuzzstortions we grew up playing. It’s different from our Haymaker™, which is a wide range drive pedal based around the rotation of a clipping network into different locations in the circuit, and which is intended to respond and feel like an extension of your amp. This pedal is really about rocking your socks off. While it can do some extremely cool mild-to-medium crunch tones, Wave Cannon II is really capable of overwhelming your amp.
While this pedal started as a simple batch of changes to the original, the more we messed with it, the more we wanted from it. We went for multiple gain stages to give us more distortion and to recover volume after the passive tone stages. The focus (mids) and tone controls are different from what we’ve done before and can give you a really broad range of textures and voicings. There is a LOT of gain and volume on tap, as we’d been infuriated in the past by great sounding classic distortion pedals we’ve owned that didn’t go far enough with clean amps, or were quieter than unity gain or the bypass signal. The rumble switch allows more low end if you want it, or lets you tighten things up if you don’t need it. For a taste of what we’re going for, enjoy a perusal of our Wave Cannon MkII manual. As per all Caroline pedals, WC MKII runs on standard industry 9V DC power supplies and features true bypass switching. It is a good pedalboard citizen that plays well with others.
We care because we know you do. The innovative music industry companies of the 1970s and ’80s hand crafted products that could last forever, were easy to maintain, could survive the hazards of the road, and sounded great. Now, imagine if one of those companies opened a satellite office in Columbia, S.C. and never bothered to tell that office that they went out of business or decided to offshore everything. Your pedal is built by touring and former pros at our “small batch distortery” who are crazy about classic pedals and the great work of our competitors. That being said, we love ours even more. Everything we have designed and will design begins as something we wished was out there for our own setups. After a LOT of revising, it becomes worthy of yours.
We had a million reasons to decide against doing this, just like you have a million excuses not to rock out. The same bravery that motivated you to take up playing is what motivated us to start building our first prototypes. Like you, we believe in genuine rock and roll fun, danger, courage, passion, commitment, and the thrill of hearing and seeing what you have dared to dream made real. These are the values that we share with our customers, and we are committed to doing our part towards getting you the most out of that experience. The rest is up to you.
While we are often asked if our start-up will become a success, we believe that every pedal we get to make for our customers is a success. Our work is dreamed, designed, and created in Columbia, South Carolina. We are proud that every pedal is hand-wired here in the USA, and we are also proud to say that we are committed to top-notch customer service and getting you fired up to play music.
