What We Think

You’ve most likely heard the Chandler TG2 preamp more times than you’ve realized, having been used on iconic and classic records from the likes of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and many more. We like to think of its sound as a blend of classic warmth and roundness with a slightly more present upper range than what you’d find on a typical Neve preamp. The additional presence is one of the key reasons you can find it used for modern-leaning recordings (additional cut to emerge from a dense mix but still plenty of round, thick tone) and also why it pairs so wonderfully with darker ribbons, most specifically the Coles 4038 for that timeless smooth and rich sound. Our favorite applications are on overheads (w/ Coles), guitars, vocals, and even piano when a more robust, musical sound is desired over hyper-detailed cleanliness. Set up a Try-Before-You-Buy demo period and hear for yourself what makes the EMI/Abbey Road sound so magical!

Chandler Limited TG2-500 Pre Amp - Sound Samples

These are sound clips of an original track recorded using Chandler limited TG2-500 microphone preamplifiers, at the in-house Chandler limited recording studio. The Chandler Limited TG2-500 pre-amp is a recreation of the rare EMI TG12428 pre amp used in EMI/Abbey Road Studios recording and mastering consoles from the late 60s and early 70s. The sound of the EMI/Abbey Road Studios equipment is world renowned, and imparts a unique and pleasing sonic character as heard on many famous recordings done at Abbey Road including The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” and Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” albums. For the first time ever, the legendary TG2 pre-amp sound is available in 500 Series format.

Manufacturer's Description from Chandler

Using the identical TG2 circuit, transistors, and transformers, the TG2-500 delivers 10 – 60 dB of gain and uses a coarse gain control and a fine gain control as found on EMI consoles. The unit also provides 300 and 1200 Ohm input impedance choices, just as on the TG2.

Equally important, the Chandler TG2-500 delivers frequency response identical to the TG2 - it has the same high frequency bump and mid forward tone that users of the original TG2 are already familiar with, along with the warmth inducing distortion which contributes to its sound. The end result is a creamy, smooth tone with a surprisingly open, clear top end. The sound, as explained by many users, has the ‘warmth and punch’ of the Neve, but with a nicer, expanded top end.
