What We Think

Just a downright worldclass flatpickin' guitar here, folks.  You couldn't ask for a more articulate, powerful tonewood combination than Adirondack and Madagascar Rosewood.  While it's certainly a bassy, authoritative guitar, this Vintage D offers balance, sensitivity, and that trademark note-to-note separation that only Dana can provide.  Single note lines are wonderfully lyrical and full of character; strumming big open chords couldn't feel more mighty.  The previous owner certainly played this one in but also took excellent care of the instrument--after a fret dress and setup from our luthier, this dread is ready for many, many more tunes.

Manufacturer's Description from Bourgeois

The best thing about our Vintage Dreadnought is that you don't have to imagine what it might sound like if you custom ordered it with an Adirondack spruce top. Ours is the only standard herringbone - style dreadnought that can make this claim.

Adirondack spruce, also known as Eastern Red Spruce, was the legendary topwood used on most pre-war American-made guitars. Properly sawn, Adirondack is much stiffer than Sitka and Engelmann spruce, both along and across the grain. This allows us to make thinner, lighter tops, resulting in lightning-quick response and power to spare. Most guitar grade "Adirondack" spruce these days comes from our own backyard--the state of Maine, which still has large stands of original and second growth softwood forests.

About Manufacturer

Bourgeois Guitars are defining the future of vintage tone, combining old-world hand-voicing techniques with modern innovations in design and materials. Built in a ca. 1850s mill in the industrial town of Lewiston Maine, master luthier Dana Bourgeois and his small team of highly skilled craftsman produce some of the finest steel-string instruments available today.

Known for tonal excellence, meticulous craftsmanship and top-notch materials, they are played by six-string luminaries such as Bryan Sutton, Ricky Skaggs, Sean Watkins, Della Mae, the late Doc Watson and countless professional and nonprofessional enthusiasts. Bourgeois guitars have had a prominent role in the American steel-string guitar renaissance for more than two decades, helping shape acoustic music’s most recent rise in popularity.
