What We Think

Condition: Used, Excellent

The new benchmark for what a fingerstyle guitar can and should be.  We picked this one out while on a trip up north to visit with the good folks at Bourgeois in Maine.  That Italian top affords the player an articulate, sophisticated response that's a bit less aggressive than its North American cousin, Adirondack.  If you don't know about Padauk yet, now is the time to get hip.  This African tonewood has quickly become one of Dana's favorites as the availability of the best Madagascar and Brazilian rosewoods sets continues to dwindle.  Aside from that stunning sunset-red color, Padauk boasts a dramatic, glassy voice with a well-ordered overtone content that seems to never get messy.  Insane note definition and clarity, almost like an archtop, meets flattop complexity and power that even some of the best Martin 0000s can't beat.  The tonewood combination couldn't be better suited to the bodystyle--the JOMT is like an OM that's evolved into another stage of musical development (greater dynamic range but just as balanced) and, with the addition of a cutaway, there isn't much stylistic ground this gorgeous instrument -can't- cover.

Manufacturer's Description from Bourgeois

The Jumbo OM Cutaway, or JOMC, is an original body style developed by Dana in the late 80's, in response to players' requests for a mid-sized guitar with the balance and clarity of an OM but with a bigger presence. The idea was simple: Start with the OM outline, enlarge it a bit, play around with the curves and deepen the sides. The result is a wonderfully versatile guitar; larger than an OM, smaller than a Dreadnought, capable of handling almost any playing style you can imagine, and equally capable of operating in solo or ensemble situations.

The JOMC comes standard with a European spruce top (Sitka and Adirondack spruce tops are options) and East Indian rosewood back and sides, with a wood rosette, squares and diamonds inlay, ebony belly bridge, tortoiseshell binding and gold Waverly tuners with ebony buttons.

Here's what builder David Wren had to say about our JOMC:

"There are very few body sizes that appeal to such a broad cross section of players as this JOM from Dana Bourgeois! When you're holding this instrument, it doesn't feel substantially larger than an Orchestra Model, yet it packs a punch not unlike a modern dreadnought ... but with better trebles! The tight waist allows the box to sit lower on your lap, giving the impression of a smaller guitar.”

About Manufacturer

Bourgeois Guitars are defining the future of vintage tone, combining old-world hand-voicing techniques with modern innovations in design and materials. Built in a ca. 1850s mill in the industrial town of Lewiston Maine, master luthier Dana Bourgeois and his small team of highly skilled craftsman produce some of the finest steel-string instruments available today.

Known for tonal excellence, meticulous craftsmanship and top-notch materials, they are played by six-string luminaries such as Bryan Sutton, Ricky Skaggs, Sean Watkins, Della Mae, the late Doc Watson and countless professional and nonprofessional enthusiasts.
