SA-251 – Tube Condenser Microphone: Vintage Large-diaphragm Tube Condenser Mic with Cardioid, Omni, and Figure-8 Polar Patterns
The Stam Audio SA-251 is the world’s finest replica of the original Telefunken ELA M 251. The SA-251 is an exact replica of the Telefunken ELA M 251 microphone.
A 251 replica has been a long-time wish, but it wasn’t until now that we have found the key components that recreate all the sonic characteristics of this classic.
With Haufe in Germany bringing back the original transformers made in the very same machine used 50 years ago and by designing a custom head basket with a dual mesh layer to tame the high frequencies, we have found the final pieces of the puzzle to achieve audio perfection.
The Stam Audio SA-251 is the world’s finest replica of the original Telefunken ELA M 251 multi-pattern tube condenser microphone. This is the only replica available with the original GE-6072A 5 star tube, Haufe T14/1 transformer, and the Tim Campbell’s CK12 capsule, considered by most engineers as the finest brass capsule reproduction built today. By selecting these components and strictly following the original schematic, not only have we have managed to give this replica the true character of an original ELA M 251, but are also the only company to have gone the extra mile to source the original components found in this magical microphone.
The SA-251 is built with premium components
Since the capsule is the single most important component on a microphone’s tone, we have decided to take extra care and use the best replica available, the famous handmade CT12 all brass capsule. Unlike other similar offerings that feature Chinese made replicas, these are 100% hand made in Denmark by Tim Campbell. The SA-251 features premium capacitors on the audio path, a NOS 6072a or 12AT7 Mullard tube (optional GE 6072A 5 start available per request) reducing the noise floor and the output impedance to give this microphone the highest functionality and quality in the market.
Perhaps the most critical component after the capsule is the Haufe T14/1 transformer. This is the original factory made from original blueprints and specs in the very same machine that manufacture them over 50 years ago.
Finally, we have the dual mesh layer: The SA-251 employs a custom made head basket that not only matches the original dimensions but also includes the thin inner mesh layer with a vital influence on the sound of this microphone as it smooths out the top end and acts like a pop filter.
