How to get a lower price, instantly!

Why do we do this?

Some manufacturers have a "minimum advertised price", which restricts how low of a price we can display. By requesting an e-mail quote from us, you give us the ability to offer you a lower price than anywhere else on the web. A quote on the product will be sent instantly to the e-mail address you enter, and you can add the product to your cart at the lower price displayed in the e-mail.

What We Think

Every now and then, a piece of studio gear comes along that fundamentally changes how we mix audio, and the original SPL Transient Designer 4 is unquestionably one of them. By inventing Differential Envelope Technology, SPL threw out the traditional compressor handbook—giving engineers a way to reshape the attack and sustain of a sound without worrying about thresholds, ratios, or peak levels.

What makes the Transient Designer 4 an indispensable secret weapon in modern mixing is its level-independent two-knob simplicity. Want more crack and snap out of a snare drum or kick pedal without raising overall peak volume? Turn up the Attack. Need to choke off annoying ring on a floor tom, eliminate room bleed on a vocal track, or extend the natural decay of a bass guitar? Simply dial the Sustain control up or down. Because it tracks the relative dynamic shape of the audio rather than absolute signal volume, quiet ghost notes get processed with the exact same musical fidelity as high-SPL rimshots.

Having four independent channels in a single rack unit makes this box a powerhouse for stem processing and drum rigs. You can treat four individual drum mics simultaneously, or engage the stereo link switches to turn the unit into two stereo processors for drum overheads, room mics, or acoustic piano.

Manufacturer's Description from SPL

Overview The SPL Transient Designer 4 is a revolutionary 4-channel dynamic envelope processor that introduced SPL’s patented Differential Envelope Technology (DET) to the pro audio world. Unlike conventional compressors or expanders, the Transient Designer operates independently of signal level thresholds, allowing engineers to manipulate the transient envelope—specifically Attack and Sustain—regardless of input volume. From reshaping the punch of drum tracks to controlling room reverberation on acoustic instruments, the Transient Designer 4 provides intuitive, level-independent dynamic control with unmatched transparency.

Differential Envelope Technology (DET) Traditional dynamics processors rely on a static threshold to trigger gain reduction. The Transient Designer’s DET technology simplifies complex envelope control by tracking the dynamic curve of the audio signal itself:

  • Attack Control: Allows amplification or attenuation of a signal's transient attack phase by up to ±15 dB. Increasing Attack sharpens initial transients (adding punch to snare drums, pick attack to guitars, or slap to bass), while decreasing Attack softens harsh, overly aggressive front-end transients.

  • Sustain Control: Enables amplification or attenuation of a signal's decay phase by up to ±24 dB. Increasing Sustain extends room decay, shell resonance, and ring, while decreasing Sustain cleans up unwanted room bleed, dampens ringing drum shells, or shortens muddy tails without altering the natural tone.

Level-Independent Operation Because the envelope followers monitor relative signal changes rather than absolute peak levels, the Transient Designer operates seamlessly across quiet or loud passages without requiring threshold re-adjustments. Quiet ghost notes receive the exact same proportion of transient processing as heavy, high-SPL snare hits.

Stereo Linking & Signal Routing The Transient Designer 4 features four independent channels that can be linked into two stereo pairs via front-panel Link switches (Channels 1/2 and Channels 3/4). When linked, the master channel controls both left and right processing paths symmetrically, ensuring precise stereo imaging without phase shifting. Each channel features an individual hard-wire bypass switch to instantly audition processed versus uncompressed signals.

Key Features

  • Patented Differential Envelope Technology: Level-independent dynamic processing that eliminates threshold, attack, and release parameter setup.

  • Simple Two-Knob Per Channel Interface: Dedicated Attack (±15 dB) and Sustain (±24 dB) controls for intuitive, immediate workflow.

  • 4 Independent Channels / 2 Stereo Pairs: Channels 1/2 and 3/4 can be linked for stereo bus or sub-mix operation.

  • Hard-Wire Relay Bypass: True bypass per channel for accurate A/B testing and fail-safe signal pass-through.

  • High-Headroom Analog Architecture: Balanced XLR I/O designed for high-dynamic-range recording and mixing environments.

  • Chassis: 1U 19" rackmount design (Made in Germany).
