What We Think

All of the Sound Pure acoustic department agrees, OMG is a pretty apt abbreviation given everything this guitar offers! When we put the specs together on this guitar, we were really trying to go after a guitar that's as aesthetically done up as possible, without having to break the bank. The tortoise binding around the body and black fingerboard binding have a sense of unity. The bearclaw figuring on top is an immediate eye-catcher along with all that Brazilian! A Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, bridge and peghead veneer round out all the aesthetic upgrades. The guitar itself offers tons of sympathetic harmonies and lush, full sounds. Its beauty is evenly matched by its sound - and that's saying quite a bit.

Manufacturer's Description from Santa Cruz

SCGC’s OM Grand is a bigger, lusher, louder sister to their extremely popular OM model.  In comparison, the OM Grand embodies the same elegance, only in increased quantity of volume, projection and bass.  More isn’t necessarily better, though in the context of a band’s competing acoustic instruments the ‘more’ of the OM Grand assures the guitar’s rightful dominance in the ensemble.

At the 2012 NAMM Show in Anaheim, SCGC’s longtime friend and dealer, Harry Tuft, asked Richard about building a special guitar to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of his shop, The Denver Folklore Center. In honor of this prestigious accomplishment, and the historical impact Harry’s shop has had on the folk movement in this country, Richard was thrilled to accept. Harry wanted a custom OM guitar with a larger body size for an increase in power in a body shape reminiscent of C.F. Martin’s historic 0000. Harry further customized his guitar to his playability needs and aesthetic values, including inlays commemorating his milestone 50th anniversary.

In preparing the templates for this new body size, Richard saw this enhanced sized OM as a fine addition to the stellar line-up of SCGC standard models, and the concept of the OM Grand was born. The strength of the OM Grand isn’t limited to sheer volume. In the sometimes restrained presence of solo fingerstyle playing, the inherent power of this guitar will generate a forceful bloom, requiring less effort with no loss of nuance. The best available tone woods are selected, voiced and tuned, as they are on all SCGC models. These include Indian Rosewood, responsibly harvested from the highest quality timbers, Sitka Spruce from British Colombia and premium Mahogany from sustainable resources

About Manufacturer

Interested in building your custom Santa Cruz with us? Email us at acoustics@soundpure.com, or call us at (919) 682-5552! Richard Hoover began building guitars and carved-top mandolins in 1972. By 1976 his focus was on the modern steel string guitar. The task of becoming a master at all aspects of guitar making is a lifelong pursuit, and Richard has patiently refined his craftsmanship and knowledge as his company has grown. It was and is Richard's intent to translate his skills and sensitivities as an individual builder to an exceptional team of craftspeople, each of whom could become an expert in their specialty. Richard's style of allowing his craftspeople to interpret his vision has propelled Santa Cruz Guitar Company to the forefront of modern guitar making. Each Santa Cruz guitar receives an extraordinary amount of individual attention due to our "bench style" of building, which necessitates that each worker not only perform his own specialty, but also review the work of those who have completed stages before him. Over half of all the instruments that we build are custom orders, reflecting to a high degree the personality and unique playing needs of the buyer. Every guitar top is graduated and tuned by hand to attain maximum resonance and sustain, ensuring a high level of consistency of sound within each standard model line as well as the ability for custom voicing. The balance, tone, volume, and response of a Santa Cruz guitar are established before the guitar is strung. By limiting the number of instruments built, we can practice a style of lutherie born from a genuine love of the guitar, as opposed to a production line approach that might favor greater numbers at the expense of our attention to detail. We believe that our approach ensures that every Santa Cruz guitar is exceptional. Our intent is to create a uniquely sophisticated instrument that will inspire and challenge its owner throughout a lifetime.
