What We Think

New for 2018, this one-of-a-kind kit represents Pork Pie’s exciting foray into full kits made from exotic tonewoods. Constructed with the same meticulous attention to detail found in their USA Custom Maple kits, Pork Pie’s Siam Oak drum set presents drummers with an enticing alternative tonewood. Siam Oak is traditionally used to make bongos, congas, and cajons, and the warm, round tones heard in these instruments abound in this drum kit.

This kit exhibits sonic characteristics quite similar to maple, with some subtle differences. Siam Oak is a softer wood than maple, meaning that this kit transmits less high-end frequency than a maple counterpart would, allowing for a warm tone with clear and articulate low-end.

Pork Pie’s thin shells allow for musically resonant tones, while the 45-degree bearing edges help to focus the sound into a punchy attack.

Manufacturer's Description from Pork Pie

Pork Pie USA custom drums are made by hand at the Pork Pie factory in Canoga Park California. Made to Pork Pie’s high standards using only the finest materials available in today’s market. Bill Detamore, the founder of Pork Pie is a hands-on owner. Bill handles all of the painting duties and edge cutting. The crew at Pork Pie follow Bill’s example of quality for every build.

Pork Pie uses American made shells using a progressive ply design. Rack toms from 6” to 13” are 6 ply. Toms from 14” through 18” are 7 ply and all bass drums and snare drums are 8 ply.

Pork Pie bearing edges are known worldwide for bringing the most out of a drum. Toms from 6” to 16” are standard with a 45-degree edge on the inside with a round over counter cut on the outside. 18” toms and all bass drums get a 60-degree edge on the inside with a round over counter cut on the outside. All edges are hand sanded and finished to perfection when a drum leaves the factory.

Pork Pie is known for classic yet edgy lacquered finishes. Bill Detamore handles all of the painting for Pork Pie and the 10 step finishing process ensures a stunning finish. Lacquer finishes are available in high gloss, satin and flat.

About Manufacturer

In 1987, Bill Detamore started making drums as a hobby. He sold one, made two more, and so on. This evolved into some of the finest handmade drums available today. To take snare drums one step further, he introduced solid (one piece), exotic wood stave and plate brass designs. Pork Pie has also introduced their Little Squealer and Hip Pig series of drums to round out the line.

Over the years, Pork Pie has become the place where a drummer can hot rod an existing kit with new bearing edges, refinishing, or design the kit of their dreams. Bill's signature is on the inside of every Pork Pie USA drum. This is his guarantee of quality. Pork Pie's goal is your total satisfaction.
