Sound Pure's Take
The original Neumann U 87 (introduced in 1967 as the solid-state evolution of the tube U 67) is arguably the most recognizable and widely used studio condenser microphone in audio recording history. Renowned for its authoritative mid-range presence, silky top-end detail, and tight low-end response, the original "vintage" U 87 set the sonic benchmark for lead vocals, voiceover, acoustic instruments, and room miking across thousands of hit records.
Unlike its modern successor (the U 87 Ai), the original U 87 features the classic K 87 dual-diaphragm capsule and an isolated, transformer-coupled FET amplifier powered by either standard $+48\text{V}$ phantom power or an internal $22.5\text{V}$ battery. This original circuit operates at a slightly lower polarization voltage, giving the vintage U 87 a fractionally lower output level but a headroom-rich, musical headroom compression, smoother high frequencies, and a warm, organic mid-range that never sounds harsh or artificially hyped.
From Neumann USA
The Neumann U 87 (original revision, introduced in 1967) is a large-diaphragm studio condenser microphone engineered as the solid-state successor to the legendary vacuum-tube U 67. Designed to meet the stringent technical demands of modern broadcast, recording, and film scoring studios, the U 87 combines Neumann’s iconic dual-membrane capsule technology with an advanced, ultra-quiet Field-Effect Transistor (FET) preamplifier stage.
At the heart of the U 87 is the famous K 67 / K 87 dual-diaphragm capsule, featuring gold-sputtered Mylar membranes that deliver a remarkably smooth, balanced, and articulate frequency response across all directional patterns. The microphone features a 3-position mechanical switch positioned directly below the headgrille, allowing the engineer to instantly select between Omnidirectional,Cardioid, and Bidirectional (Figure-8) polar patterns.
Unlike later revisions powered strictly via phantom power, the original U 87 (often designated U 87 i) was designed with complete operational versatility in mind. It accepts standard $+48\text{V}$ phantom power (DIN 45596) or can be powered internally using a compartment that houses a $22.5\text{-volt}$ battery (such as the Mallory PX-21), ensuring reliable, ultra-low-noise operation even in broadcast environments where phantom power was not yet standard. Equipped with a switchable $-10\text{ dB}$ attenuation pad for high-SPL sources and a low-frequency roll-off switch to compensate for proximity effect, the original U 87 stands as the definitive reference standard in studio condenser microphone design.
Key Features
-
K 87 Large-Diaphragm Capsule: Dual-diaphragm capsule construction based on the classic U 67 design, delivering pristine detail, smooth mid-range presence, and authoritative low-end response.
-
Three Switchable Polar Patterns: Front-panel pattern selector switch permits immediate switching between Cardioid,Omnidirectional, and Figure-8 pickup characteristics.
-
Discrete FET 80 Electronics: Transformer-balanced FET circuitry provides exceptional dynamic range, ultra-low self-noise, and fast transient response without tube coloration or maintenance.
-
Internal Battery Power Compartment: Accommodates a $22.5\text{V}$ internal battery for standalone mobile and remote recording, automatically disengaging when $+48\text{V}$ phantom power is detected.
-
Switchable -10 dB Pad: High-SPL attenuation switch increases maximum sound pressure level handling up to $132\text{ dB SPL}$ for loud brass, drums, and amplifier cabinets.
-
Low-Frequency Roll-Off Switch: Built-in high-pass filter mitigates low-frequency rumble, hum, and proximity effect build-up during close-miking applications.
