What We Think

Condition: Used, Excellent

SP Luthier Notes: The truss rod and bridge were adjusted to a small degree. Some of the frets were polished, recrowned and leveled. No further work was required.

Investing in an instrument of this caliber is a decision that resonates for a lifetime, and this J-14 Fret beauty, graced with a gloss-finished spruce top and East Indian Rosewood back and sides, truly embodies that spirit. Its genuine mahogany neck, shaped to a GE Modified Low Oval with High-Performance Taper, offers supremely comfortable playability, while the meticulously polished, recrowned, and leveled frets ensure every note rings true, a testament to its careful stewardship. The subtle adjustments to the truss rod and bridge ensure a rock-solid, responsive instrument. With its striking abalone inlays, golden open gear tuners, and powerful forward-shifted X-brace, this isn't just an instrument; it's a unique specimen, ready to inspire your musical journey for years to come.

Manufacturer's Description from Martin

The Martin J-40 is a trusted standout in Martin’s acoustic lineup that makes an unforgettable statement in both sound and style. Its Jumbo body size combines a larger, tight-waisted shape with powerful projection, delivering resonant bass, shimmering trebles, and exceptional balance that suits any playing style. Handcrafted with a solid spruce top and solid East Indian rosewood back and sides, the J-40 boasts deep bass and rich overtones, creating a sound that’s as dynamic as its design. The satin genuine mahogany neck with a Golden Era (GE) Modified Low Oval profile, high-performance taper, and 25.4" scale length ensures smooth, comfortable playability. Luxurious details, including its abalone rosette and bound ebony fingerboard with hexagon inlays, enhance its timeless beauty. Complete with antique white binding, an ebony bridge with bone pins, and gold open gear tuners, the J-40 is a guitar you can trust to unleash the artist within.

Martin’s refreshed Standard Series for 2025 enhances tone, comfort, and style. Sitka spruce GE top bracing, as featured on the Modern Deluxe Series, delivers vintage-inspired tone and sustain, while updates like a reimagined neck profile, thinner fingerboard, and refined bridge and heel improve playability and aesthetics. Each guitar includes a hardshell case.

About Manufacturer

For well over a century and a half, The Martin Guitar Company has been continuously producing acoustic instruments that are acknowledged to be the finest in the world. The Martin Guitar Company has, through the years, managed to survive with each succeeding generation from C. F. Martin, Sr.?s Stauffer influenced creations of the 1830s to recent developments introduced by C. F. Martin IV. Continuous operation under family management is a feat bordering on the remarkable, reflecting six generations of dedication to the guitarmaker?s craft. In or out of the music industry, C. F. Martin has few rivals for sheer staying power. Throughout its colorful history, the company has adapted successfully to continual changes in product design, distribution systems, and manufacturing methods. In spite of the many changes, C. F. Martin has never veered away from its initial commitment to quality. The concern for producing the finest instruments possible in 1833 is especially evident today at Martin?s expanded facility in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. The story behind one of America?s most famous guitars began on January 31, 1796, in Markneukirchen, Germany, with the birth of Christian Frederick Martin, Sr. Born into a long line of cabinet makers, Christian Frederick took up the family craft at the early age of 15, when he left his hometown and traveled to Vienna to apprentice with Johann Stauffer, a renowned guitar maker.
