The Intersound IVP is one of those pieces that doesn’t really fit into a neat category—and that’s exactly why people love it.
On paper, it’s a preamp with EQ and filtering. In practice, it’s a tone-shaping box with a ton of personality. The IVP has a way of taking a source and making it feel more intentional—more focused, more aggressive, or just more interesting depending on how you dial it in.
What really sets it apart is the voicing control and the way the filters interact. You’re not just boosting and cutting frequencies—you’re reshaping the character of the signal. It can get punchy and forward, or gritty and raw, or surprisingly tight and controlled. There’s a lot of range here, and it rewards experimentation.
It’s especially great on bass and guitar, where it can add presence and attitude in a way that feels immediate. But it’s just as useful as a creative tool in the studio—running tracks through it, reamping, or adding some analog edge to something that feels too clean.
There’s definitely a vintage charm to it, too. It’s not pristine or overly polished, and that’s part of the appeal. The IVP brings a bit of unpredictability and character that can make things feel more alive.
For engineers and players looking for something with personality—something that goes beyond clean and clinical—the Intersound IVP is a unique, inspiring piece that still holds its own decades later.
This particular unit is in excellent condition considering its age. There are some scratches and racking marks. One of the rack ears sustained a slight bend and has been straightened. It still functions wonderfully.
The Intersound IVP (Instrument Voicing Preamp) is a cult-classic piece of studio and live gear, known for its distinctive tone-shaping capabilities and unmistakably musical character.
Originally designed as a flexible front-end for instruments, the IVP combines a preamp, EQ, and filtering sections into a compact and highly adaptable unit. Its circuit design allows for a wide range of tonal sculpting—from clean and articulate to aggressive and heavily colored—making it especially popular among bassists, guitarists, and experimental engineers.
At the heart of the IVP is its unique voicing control, which lets you reshape the midrange response in a way that goes beyond traditional EQ. Combined with sweepable filters and gain staging options, it offers an interactive approach to tone shaping that encourages exploration and creativity.
Sonically, the IVP has a character all its own. It can add punch, grit, and presence, or dial back into a tighter, more controlled sound depending on how it’s set. That versatility has made it a favorite for direct recording, reamping, and adding analog personality to otherwise clean sources.
As a vintage unit, the IVP also carries a certain unpredictability and charm—part of what has helped it earn a loyal following over the years.
For anyone looking to add a unique, character-driven preamp and tone-shaping tool to their setup, the Intersound IVP remains a distinctive and inspiring piece with a sound that’s anything but ordinary.
