What We Think

At first glance, the Ear Trumpet Labs Edwina looks like a antique steampunk work of art, but behind its hand-assembled copper and brass chassis lies one of the most practical, stunningly natural-sounding condenser microphones available for both stage and studio. Handcrafted in Portland, Oregon, the Edwina has earned a cult following among acoustic instrumentalists, bluegrass groups, and vocalists who demand studio-grade clarity without the headaches typically associated with live condenser mics.

What sets the Edwina apart is its ability to deliver the smooth, intimate detail of a true large-diaphragm condenser while maintaining extraordinary off-axis rejection. Philip Graham and the Ear Trumpet Labs team designed the capsule and internal damping system specifically to minimize feedback on tight stages. You get a warm, balanced low end, detailed midrange, and an airy top end that stays remarkably smooth, making acoustic guitars, banjos, upright basses, and lead vocals jump out of a mix with zero harshness.

In the studio, the Edwina holds its own as a go-to workhorse on everything from drum overheads and room mics to acoustic instruments and intimate vocals. Its pivoting head design makes positioning effortless, while its built-in internal silk pop filter and retro-pivoting shock-mount design keep plosives and mechanical rumble at bay.

Manufacturer's Description from Ear Trumpet

Manufacturer Description: Ear Trumpet Labs Edwina

Overview The Edwina is the flagship multi-purpose large-diaphragm condenser microphone from Ear Trumpet Labs. Handcrafted in Portland, Oregon, the Edwina is designed to deliver studio-quality audio performance both on stage and in the recording studio. Engineered specifically for acoustic musicians, vocalists, and live performers, it combines an eye-catching retro-industrial aesthetic with exceptional acoustic detail, smooth off-axis rejection, and superior feedback resistance.

Acoustic & Electronic Design At the core of the Edwina is a hand-tuned 26mm large-diaphragm capsule configured in a tight cardioid polar pattern. The internal signal path utilizes custom Class-A transformerless FET electronics to ensure low noise, high output, and maximum transient clarity. Tailored for natural acoustic reproduction, the Edwina captures a warm, full-bodied low end, clear midrange, and an airy, uncolored high-frequency extension without the harshness or artificial hype common in modern condensers.

Stage-Ready Feedback Rejection & Shock Isolation Designed specifically to solve the challenges of using sensitive condenser microphones in live sound environments, the Edwina features advanced internal acoustic damping and mechanical isolation. Its tight cardioid pattern provides maximum gain-before-feedback on loud stages, while an internal silk pop filter guards against breath plosives and wind noise.

Handcrafted Construction & Flexible Mounting Each Edwina microphone is individually assembled using heavy-duty copper, brass, stainless steel, and iron components. The capsule basket is mounted inside a retro-styled metal ring that pivots on a stainless-steel frame, allowing for precise, effortless angle positioning on standard microphone stands without requiring bulky external shock mounts or additional adapters.

  • Custom Retro-Industrial Aesthetic: Unique, hand-assembled chassis crafted from copper, brass, and steel in Portland, OR.

Ear Trumpet Labs

About Manufacturer

Ear Trumpet Labs is the unholy offspring of a former software engineer with a habit of building audio gear. Having learned the arcane secrets of microphone construction from his betters, he set about finding the coolest looking, most unlikely components with which to make bodies for his babies.

Emerging from the dark, he held before him the talismanic sound-art pieces that would light the path forward for a new workshop. In constant flux and experimentation, the microphones of Ear Trumpet Labs are all glimmering spots of distinctive light in a world of boring same-old.

We love to hear from artists, musical and otherwise, that want to use our mics, or build their own, or collaborate in some way. Drop us a line.
