he Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter CL-X2 is a dual-channel microphone activator used to add clean, controllable gain to low-output microphones before they reach your preamp or audio interface. It is designed to improve signal-to-noise ratio, reduce unwanted artifacts, and allow preamps to operate in a more optimal range—making it especially useful when working with gain-hungry microphones and quieter sound sources.
Ultraclean Gain for Low-Output Microphones
In Max mode, the CL-X2 provides up to +36 dB of ultraclean gain, making it well suited for applications such as podcasting, ASMR, acoustic instruments, Foley work, and other low-level sources. A custom CineMag nickel transformer adds dynamic character with wide bandwidth, delivering transformer "vibe" that responds naturally to input level while retaining the clarity of the Cloudlifter core design.
Flexible Gain Control
For louder sources, the selectable output attenuator allows the gain to be reduced by up to 12 dB, enabling use on higher-level applications such as snare drums or loud guitar amplifiers without sacrificing tonal character. The CL-X2 is fully plug-and-play, compatible with dynamic, ribbon, and tube microphones, safe for all passive ribbons, and does not pass phantom power to the microphone.
Plug-and-Play Compatibility and Road-Ready Design
Built with a rugged, portable, road-ready design, the Cloudlifter CL-X2 is suitable for both studio and live use. All Cloudlifter electronics are designed, manufactured, and assembled in the USA, with production taking place in the Navajo Nation in Arizona, and include a free limited lifetime warranty with product registration.

The story began with RCA* when Harry F. Olson developed the 44 and 77 series of ribbon microphones. Jon R. Sank succeeded Mr. Olson and was challenged by RCA to improve upon Harry’s best microphones. He did just that with the BK11, a direct descendant of the 44 series. It has been an industry secret for many years among top engineers, that the BK-11 is the most advanced ribbon microphone in the world.
Beginning at just 10 years old, Stephen Sank studied with his father and began building upon lessons learned from the original RCA laboratory. Jon Sank shared more than 50 years of skill and innovation with his son Stephen before passing away in 1998.
Today, Stephen continues the Sank family tradition of developing quality hand crafted ribbon microphones in collaboration with Cloud Microphones. The Cloud JRS-34 takes the next step in the legendary BK-11 and 44 series of ribbon microphones.
Made in Tucson Arizona, Cloud’s continued commitment to high quality, USA made, sustainable, and environmentally friendly manufacturing, has created new jobs and economic growth throughout the supply chain.
