What We Think

Since their introduction, the Yamaha Maple Custom Series has become a standard by which other drums are judged. These classic (now discontinued) drums are famous for their amazing build quality and incredible sound and are becoming increasingly scarce to find and acquire.

This kit has been well cared for, maintained in Sound Pure's very own climate and humidity controlled Grammy-nominated recording studio.  As one of the house selections, this kit has been used on Shirley Caesar's Grammy-nominated record, as well as with many other Grammy-nominated and critically acclaimed artists who have used the Sound Pure Studios over the last few years, and selected this kit for their project.  This kit was frequently selected from our collection of instruments due to its tonal palate.  Specifically, their thicker shells which offer projection and focus.

Because the Yamaha Japanese series is no longer available, we reluctantly must let it go – this is because we are not able to offer these kits for sale to the artists that fall in love with them in our studio.   This kit is in perfect working order, and with a polishing buff, could easily be brought back to the like-new sheen.  Very well cared for, no dents or damage to the shells, just one scratch (approx 1”) on the floor tom (that can't be buffed), and otherwise signs of use are light surface scratching and dirt – again, which can generally be buffed out.

A historic must-have for professionals, this Yamaha Maple Custom kit is for a musician user, not a collector who wants it on museum display.  But it's ready to make gorgeous tones, right out of the box.   Crafted from all-maple shells, the Maple Custom offers a sound that harkens to the rich and robust tones of both modern and vintage drums.   The hardware, which this set is known for, is in great condition. The drums tune like a dream for simple adjusting in a short period of time.  Of note, the batter die-cast hoop has some scuffing which can be seen in the photos. The chrome and gold show very little signs of pitting and the YESS mounts are as solid as the day that they were produced.

Manufacturer's Description from Yamaha

Although there were concerns that a change from birch to maple shells might meet some resistance from users, Yamaha decided to introduce maple shells in order to accommodate changes in the music scene as well as evolving recording technology.

From about the mid 80's, influenced by the emergence of fusion, drummers began demanding response and resonance that would suit the more elaborate phrasing used in that genre. Maple provided a bright, rapid response that was ideal, and by reducing the dimensions of parts that could dampen resonance as much as possible the natural shell resonance could come through with unrestricted tone. This led to the development of small, lightweight lugs, an extremely thin "vintage" finish, and the YESS (Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System) nodal mount for open, organic shell resonance.

The idea of using small lugs mounted so that they don't dampen shell resonance was quickly adopted by other manufacturers as well.
