At Sound Pure, we’ve long considered the "G-Style" bus compressor an essential food group for any serious studio. The TK Audio BC501 takes that legendary VCA "glue" and packs it into a double-wide 500 Series module, but with several clever Swedish engineering twists that make it far more versatile than a standard clone.
What We Think
The BC501 is the 500 Series evolution of TK Audio’s flagship BC1-S. While many VCA compressors are "set and forget," the BC501 invites you to tweak. It’s remarkably transparent when you want it to be, but it has enough onboard tools to add grit and "grab" when a mix feels too polite.
The "Swiss Army" Glue
What sets the BC501 apart from other SSL-style units is the sheer amount of control you have over how the compressor reacts to your audio:
The Blend Knob: This is the star of the show. It allows for instant parallel compression. You can absolutely smash your drum bus to get that explosive energy and then dial it back to 30% to keep your transients intact.
The THD Switch: If you find the VCA circuit a bit too "clean," engaging the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) adds a subtle layer of even-order harmonics. It’s not a distortion pedal, but it provides a "weight" and saturation that helps a digital mix feel more like it came off a console.
Expanded Ratios: Unlike the standard 2, 4, and 10 ratios, TK added a 1.25:1 (perfect for gentle mastering glue) and a 6:1 for more aggressive heavy lifting.
Precision and RecallFor engineers doing hybrid mixing, recall is everything. Every control on the BC501 is stepped. Whether you're jumping between projects or trying to match a setting from six months ago, you can do so with 100% accuracy.
Key HighlightsThree HPF Settings: The sidechain filter has 80Hz, 150Hz, and 220Hz options. This ensures your kick drum doesn't "freak out" the compressor, allowing the low end to breathe while the rest of the mix stays tight.
The "Grab" Function: On newer models (BC501-GR), the "Grab" mode selects a harder threshold knee, which is fantastic for making drums snap and pop out of the speakers.
Front-Panel Sidechain: A 3.5mm jack on the front makes it incredibly easy to "duck" your mix or trigger the compressor from an external source without diving behind your rack.
Our Take: "The BC501 is perhaps the most feature-dense bus compressor in the 500 Series format. It provides that classic 'finished record' sound but adds modern amenities like parallel blending and THD that make it a total powerhouse for both mixing and mastering."
Since the it was released in 2015 it has found its way into a great numbers of 500 racks all around the globe. The BC501 is one of the most transparent stereo bus compressors ever made. The smooth, soft compression together with the blend control, high-pass filter and the THD function are much appreciated features that now have been expanded with the grab function, known from the BC1-THD. The grab function turns the threshold knee harder and makes the compressor even more perfect for the drum-bus. The BC501 is available in two versions, the BC501-GR with the standard stock black panel and the BC501-Ltd with silver panel, individually numbered and limited edition of 100 units.
