What We Think

Weight: 7.6 lbs.

Crafted especially for vintage feel and tone with modern playability, the 2015 Classic Antique series embodies the best of Suhr's builds. The Classic Antique series is John Suhr's response to the gigging musician's need for professional-grade instruments at an affordable price point, with the most requested specs of Suhr's catalogue applied to incredible 'S' and 'T' style guitars. Lightly reliced finishes ensure the guitarist can take his or her axe out to the gig without having to worry over smalls dings and dents in the guitar's finish!

John Suhr’s ‘T’ style guitar, like all aspects of his brand, are rooted in tradition. The Classic T Antique series has taken the most notable characteristics of 50’s ‘T’ style guitars that gained so much notoriety, and applied a few modern twists for exceptional playability. It all starts with the Swamp Ash body, a common staple of vintage ‘T’ styles. The tonewood has a natural brightness and crisp clarity that can only be attributed to itself, with awesome natural presence. With the capability to cut through any mix, and the vintage mojo that can nail just about any clean tone imaginable - you’ll be hard pressed to find a more impressive build of a vintage tone machine like this one!

Manufacturer's Description from John Suhr

CLASSIC T ANTIQUETM
TIMELESS TONE - UNRIVALED PLAYABILITY

Updated for 2015 the Classic T Antique now includes: our innovative SSCII (Silent Single-Coil) hum cancelling system, SSV neck pickup option, Alder body option, 2 new nitrocellulose body finishes, a vintage tinted nitrocellulose finished neck, a Rosewood fingerboard option, and a parchment pickguard.

In the spirit of the original, the all new Classic T Antique™ has been developed to meet the demands of the player who asks for an instrument that preserves classic tone and design, while improving on the limitations of vintage instruments. The Classic T Antique™ propels this design to new heights by blending the best of the old and new schools, in a design that will make you re-think what is possible.

Available in two great Classic T Antique eras:

50’s Spec: 2-piece Swamp Ash body with Maple fingerboard on a Maple neck, Trans finishes (2 Tone Burst, Trans Butterscotch or Trans White), and single-ply pickguard (Black Bakelite or White).

60’s Spec: 2-piece Alder body with a Rosewood fingerboard on a Maple neck, Finishes (3 Tone Burst, Black or Olympic White), and a 3-Ply Parchment pickguard.

A covered SSV humbucker in the neck position is an available option on both the 50's and 60's models.

The nitro-cellulose lacquer finish and our proprietary antiquing process make each Classic T Antique™ feel like it has been loved for years.

TONE WOODS

ALDER - One of the most popular guitar body woods of the 1960's, is grown all over the world. Alder is medium to light in weight with soft tight pores. It has a light tan color and can sometimes exhibit large swirling grain patterns and rings. Alder is favored by blues and rock players for its strong, clear, full-bodied sound, with beefy mids and excellent lows. Alder is used extensively for guitar bodies because of its light weight and its full sound.

SWAMP ASH - Popular in the 1950's for guitar bodies, Swamp Ash originates from the Southern parts of America, from trees whose root systems are under water. This wood is lightweight and porous. Its color is light with pronounced dark brown grain patterns which makes it ideal for transparent finishes. Popular with country, blues, rock and metal players alike, Swamp Ash is highly resonant and offers a nice balance of pleasant highs, firm lows, and a slightly scooped midrange.

MAPLE - Sourced mostly from the Northern United States and Canada and is commonly used to make necks. Maple has a classic tone, strong in the midrange with a sweet spanky high end.

ROSEWOOD - Being one of the most popular fingerboard woods for guitars, Indian Rosewood is usually sourced from either India or Bangladesh. It has a thick grain pattern with colors ranging from brown-black, purple, to red-brown. Indian Rosewood is particularly favored by blues and rock players for it’s thick, sweet tone. It has an ideal balance of fat lows, warm mids and a sparkling high end presence.

NECK - Each Classic T Antique is equipped with our Even C Medium neck profile. Rolled edges and a 9-12” compound fingerboard radius offers a substantial, yet comfortable shape.

NECK FINISH - The Quarter sawn Maple neck is tinted, then finished in nitrocellulose lacquer, which protects the neck from moisture and provides a comfortable feel of a vintage instrument.

FRETS - Every Classic T Antique includes medium stainless steel frets, which offers silky smooth bending and long-lasting playability. Utilizing the PLEK process on each instrument guarantees the best possible string action, ensures optimized playability and eliminates intonation problems.

ELECTRONICS - The Classic T Antique™ is available in both S-S and H-S pickup configurations.

SSCII (SILENT SINGLE-COIL) - Our proprietary passive 60-cycle hum reduction system that has no impact on tone, no batteries to change - just transparent noise reduction.

SSV - The SSV is a versatile pickup that combines the warmth of a vintage humbucker with increased clarity and definition. It is wound hotter for more output, increased sustain and a sweet midrange response.

CLASSIC T- The Classic T pickups are wound to produce a broad range of classic T-style tones, from clean and snappy to warm and punchy with just the right amount of growl, the Classic T Antique is equally at home in a Nashville honky-tonk or on the Sunset Strip. Every Classic T pickup is hand-built, precisely wound (using our proprietary winding process) and features: plain enamel (neck) or formvar wire (bridge), specially formulated Alnico V magnets and vintage correct black fiber bottoms.

HARDWARE

TUNERS - The Classic T Antique is equipped with staggered locking tuners which provide improved tuning stability and eliminate the need for a traditional string tree.

BRIDGE - The Wilkinson compensated bridge with brass saddles, was chosen for it’s superior tuning stability, sustain and intonation performance while maintaining a classic look and vibe a true vintage instrument.
