Sound Pure's Take
Condition: Used, Very Good
Regardless of the progeny of the back and sides, this Steve Kovacik D-28-S is a fabulous instrument. Graceful appointments like herringbone purfling over ivoroid binding pay tribute to its Martin 28-style pedigree. The mahogany neck sports a chunky deep-C profile that's surprisingly comfortable in the hand. Sonically, it's strikingly close to textbook Brazilian: rich bass and bell-like treble, but with a little less scoop in the midrange (all the better for it, in my opinion). That high-end clarity helps out with fingerstyle play, while the big bottom fills a room when strumming chords. The Sitka spruce top carries it all with grace and plentiful headroom. If you've ever wondered about the mystique of Brazilian rosewood but don't have spare organs to sell, you should give this 12-fret dreadnought a try.
