Sound Pure's Take
The SSL X-Desk is one of those mixers that makes you realize how much you’ve missed working on a real analog desk—even if your workflow is mostly in the box.
At its core, the X-Desk is about bringing genuine SSL console workflow and summing into a compact format that actually fits modern studios. Built around the same SuperAnalogue circuitry found in SSL’s larger AWS, Matrix, and Duality consoles, it delivers the openness, headroom, and depth people associate with classic SSL desks without needing an entire control room to house it.
What really stands out is how tactile and immediate it feels. The 100mm faders, dedicated routing, inserts, cue sends, and monitor controls all encourage faster, more instinctive mixing decisions. Instead of endlessly clicking through plugins and menus, you’re actually interacting with the mix—and that changes the creative process in a very real way.
Sonically, the X-Desk has that clean-but-confident SSL sound. The stereo image feels wide and stable, the low end stays tight, and mixes tend to take on a sense of cohesion and depth that’s difficult to describe until you hear it. It’s not about heavy coloration—it’s about clarity, punch, and analog summing that helps tracks feel more connected and dimensional.
What we especially appreciate is how flexible it is. You can use it as a summing mixer, a hybrid studio centerpiece, a monitor controller, or even expand it into a larger modular SSL system by cascading multiple units together. For DAW-based studios wanting real analog workflow without committing to a massive console, it hits a really compelling sweet spot.
And despite all of that capability, it still feels very focused. SSL didn’t try to cram unnecessary features into it—they concentrated on the things engineers actually use every day and executed them exceptionally well.
For engineers looking to bring true SSL workflow, summing, and ergonomics into a smaller hybrid studio, the X-Desk remains one of the smartest and most satisfying compact analog mixers ever made.
From Solid State Logic
Meeting the demand for a world class, compact SSL mixing desk, X-Desk combines a 16 channel SSL SuperAnalogue summing mixer with a compact analogue audio hub for your studio. Small enough to be easily transported, X-Desk fulfills all the essentials of the audio mixing process, with typical SSL attention to detail and depth, including smooth 100mm faders, comprehensive artist & studio monitoring with Dim & Cut buttons, Stereo and Mono Aux sends, channel and Master Bus Inserts and accurate bar graph level metering.
For easy integration into your existing studio, X-Desk can be used as an elegant and and ergonomically refined desktop mixer with removable rack ears for standard 19" rack mounting (7U space required). Like all SSL SuperAnalogue products, it is extremely robust, hand-built in the UK with an all metal chassis and high quality controls and components. Up to eight X-Desks or X-Desk & X-Rack combinations can be cascaded via D-Sub connection to expand up to 160 inputs on mixdown.
X-Desk brings benchmark audio performance to the compact mixer format.
