Sound Pure's Take
The Shadow Hills Mono Optograph brings the smooth, musical leveling of classic electro-optical compression into a single-slot 500 Series module, backed by Shadow Hills’ legendary discrete Class-A circuitry and custom transformer design. Created by Peter Reardon, the Optograph delivers the effortless dynamic control engineers expect from a vintage opto compressor while offering enhanced clarity and flexible sidechain sculpting.
What makes the Mono Optograph stand out in a sea of opto limiters is its sophisticated detector sidechain filter options and desaturate capabilities. By allowing you to shield the optical cell from heavy low-end transients, it keeps vocals, bass guitars, and acoustic instruments sounding open, full, and un-squashed, while the Class-A signal path adds weight, mid-range punch, and silky top-end extension.

The Shadow Hills Mono Optograph is a mastering-grade optical compressor module engineered for the 500 Series format. Designed by Shadow Hills founder Peter Reardon, the Optograph brings the warm, smooth, and effortless dynamic control of classic electro-optical attenuators into a rugged, precision-crafted single-slot module. Built around a discrete Class-A signal path, custom iron-core output transformers, and vintage electroluminescent optical cells, it offers transparent leveling or rich, vintage-style saturation.
At the core of the Mono Optograph is its switchable filter topology, which modifies how the optical detector circuit responds to low-frequency energy. With selectable sidechain filter curves, engineers can prevent heavy bass signals from over-compressing the mid and high frequencies. Combined with Shadow Hills' signature military-grade construction, custom engraved front panel, and heavy-duty Bakelite knobs, the Mono Optograph delivers timeless optical compression with unmatched reliability and analog authority.
Key Features
-
Discrete Class-A Signal Path: Pure Class-A electronics combined with custom Shadow Hills output transformers deliver immense headroom, low-end punch, and high-frequency smoothness.
-
Electroluminescent Optical Attenuation: Utilizes a custom optical cell to provide classic, frequency-dependent compression characteristics with natural attack and release curves.
-
Flexible Sidechain Filter Modes: Features integrated low-frequency sidechain filters to decouple deep bass transients from the compression trigger, preserving low-end weight on vocal, bass, and mix sub-groups.
-
Desaturate & Filter Controls: Allows fine-tuning of harmonic saturation and high-frequency emphasis to shape the tonal color of the compressed audio.
-
Military-Grade Hardware Construction: Heavy-duty steel chassis featuring a custom engraved metal faceplate, vintage-style VU metering, and custom machined Bakelite control knobs.
