If you tend to prefer used instruments for their worn-in sound, feel, and price, take a gander at this pre-loved 2006 D/PW. The small dings and scratching found on the instrument make one thing clear--the previous owner -could not- put this guitar down! All that playing called for a refret for the first 7 frets as well as a bridge re-glue from our luthier and now this blue collar bluegrasser is ready to get back on the road. Tonally, it just doesn't get much warmer or richer. Bass response, overtone content, and top end shimmer are all there but perfectly orchestrated with one another, making for an uncommonly balanced instrument given its size. Sensitive, too--true to the design, this D/PW boasts a level of nuance lacking in many other dreads out there. It'll keep you honest, that's for sure! Throw in the top-of-the-line L.R. Baggs pickup and you couldn't ask for a more stage ready guitar for flatpickers, folksingers, and festival fanatics of all stripes.

This dramatic sounding model was designed to introduce the superior sound of Santa Cruz Guitars to players that had been afraid to touch them. SCGC’s reputation for relentless quality and attendant high prices kept many from even trying one out. The Pre-War Model was okay to approach, not inexpensive but not completely intimidating either. Given the opportunity to hear a truly sophisticated guitar, perhaps for the first time, players experienced a paradigm shift in what they thought possible. The D/PW’s powerful volume, overtones and rich presence is an epiphany to the uninitiated. There are no unnecessary design features on this model, simply the finest materials treated to SCGC’s state of the art lutherie. This instrument is the best value to be had in a professionally hand made guitar, period.

By 1976 his focus was on the modern steel string guitar. The task of becoming a master at all aspects of guitar making is a lifelong pursuit, and Richard has patiently refined his craftsmanship and knowledge as his company has grown. Over half of all the instruments that we build are custom orders, reflecting to a high degree the personality and unique playing needs of the buyer. Every guitar top is graduated and tuned by hand to attain maximum resonance and sustain, ensuring a high level of consistency of sound within each standard model line as well as the ability for custom voicing. The balance, tone, volume, and response of a Santa Cruz guitar are established before the guitar is strung. By limiting the number of instruments built, we can practice a style of lutherie born from a genuine love of the guitar, as opposed to a production line approach that might favor greater numbers at the expense of our attention to detail. We believe that our approach ensures that every Santa Cruz guitar is exceptional. Our intent is to create a uniquely sophisticated instrument that will inspire and challenge its owner throughout a lifetime.
