What We Think

The Radial Workhorse Powerhouse is one of those pieces that isn’t about tone—it’s about unlocking everything else in your rack.

At its core, it’s a 10-slot 500 series chassis, but what makes it stand out is how thoughtfully it’s designed for real-world use. The build is solid and road-ready, with a heavy steel chassis that keeps things quiet and reliable even in demanding setups.

Where it really earns its name, though, is in the functionality. The Powerhouse isn’t just a place to hold modules—it’s a routing tool. The feed function lets you link adjacent modules without patch cables, and the stereo link switches make pairing compressors or EQs quick and painless. It turns your 500 series rack into a flexible, modular signal chain instead of just a collection of individual pieces.

Power is another big part of the story. With a robust 1600mA supply, it handles modern, power-hungry modules—including tube designs—without breaking a sweat. That kind of headroom matters more than you might think, especially as racks get more complex.

In use, it’s all about workflow. Between the individual XLR and TRS I/O on every slot and the ability to cross-patch internally, you can build, tweak, and experiment with signal chains quickly—without constantly reaching for a patchbay.

It’s also completely transparent. There’s no audio circuitry in the path beyond what’s needed to connect your modules, so it stays out of the way sonically and lets your gear do what it’s supposed to do.

For engineers building out a serious 500 series setup, the Powerhouse lives up to its name. It’s not just a rack—it’s a foundation that makes your modules more powerful, more flexible, and a lot more fun to use.

This unit is in excellent working condition. It has some cosmetic blemishes. Mainly scratches from racking. The faceplate has a slight bow but it does not interefer with racking the unit or installing or removing modules.

Manufacturer's Description from Radial

The Powerhouse is a 10 module 500 series power-rack designed to accommodate both older and newer 500 series modules and provide the studio with maximum density in a standard 19" rack frame.

The design begins with heavy 14 gauge steel construction and baked enamel finish for maximum shielding against noise and greater durability when subjected to road use. An 'easy glide' slider tray makes it painless to align the PCB connector to the 15 pin card edge receptacle when swapping modules. Once connected, the rear panel sports a standard array of XLRs to connect to and from the workstation or mixer. This is augmented with a series of ¼" TRS connectors that enable cross-patching and open the door to the excitement of parallel signal processing. Instead of having to hard patch modules together using a cable, the Powerhouse incorporates an innovative feed switch that instantly connects the signal to the adjacent module. This makes building signal chains quick and eliminates the need for extra cables. And unlike older racks that require soldering when modules are used in stereo, the Powerhouse is equipped with a stereo link function that takes care of the task with a simple slide of a switch.

Unlike older racks that are limited to an average of 130 milliamps per slot, the Powerhouse boasts a 1600 milliamp power supply that lets you share the power as needed. This means it can deliver 300 milliamps to your two tube preamps and still have over 1000 milliamps left in the pool! And just like all Workhorse racks, the Powerhouse is equipped with extra safety features to ensure safe use when mixing and matching various brands.

The Powerhouse delivers more flexibility than all others.

  • 10-slot design for maximum density
  • Individual XLR & ¼" TRS i/o on each slot
  • Easy-Glide module alignment tray
  • Innovative feed and link functions

About Manufacturer

Radial Engineering is a manufacturer and distributor of professional audio equipment, building tools for the working audio and audio-video professional. Radial is located on the Fraser River, just outside Vancouver, British Columbia in the municipality of Port Coquitlam. The company began operations in the fall of 1991 as the Canadian distributor of Mogami cable and Jensen Audio Transformers. In 1992, it became a limited corporation under the JP Cabletek Electronics Ltd. banner. The Radial name was first used on house branded cables and snake systems. The Radial name and logo represents a cross section of quad cable; Radial being round. In 1996 the Radial JDI direct box was launched. This led the way to the Radial JDV and today, over 50 electronic products are now being produced under the Radial, Tonebone and Forest Audio brands. In 2001, the Primacoustic brand was launched to address the growing demand for acoustic products for the burgeoning home recording market and in 2006, the company officially changed its name to Radial Engineering Ltd.

Specifications

The Powerhouse is a ten card-slot 500 series power rack designed to fit three standard 19" rack-spaces (3RU). The Powerhouse follows the guidelines set out in the Workhorse open-source document (Whos-Doc) to accommodate the very latest Radial modules with Omniport™ while being backwards compatible with older modules. This means that it will work with pretty much all 500 series modules. Regarding the audio performance, as there is no audio circuitry other than connectors, the Powerhouse will not impart any color or distortion. The Powerhouse employs gold plated 15-pin EDAC card-edge connectors on the inside plane and nickel-silver Neutrik connectors on the back panel for excellent signal transfer. Each slot is equipped with an auto-resetting fuse to protect the system should a faulty module be employed. A 1600 milliamp external supply provides plenty of current to feed the modules and 48V for phantom power.
