What We Think

The Peluso CEMC-6 Matched Pair has long been one of our absolute favorite small-diaphragm condenser (SDC) sets in the shop. Hand-built in Virginia by John Peluso and his team, these pencil mics sit in that sweet spot between classic vintage tone—recalling the detail and warmth of a Neumann KM84—and modern, ultra-reliable solid-state design.

What makes the CEMC-6 pair stand out from the crowd of sub-$1,500 stereo pairs is its remarkable balance across the frequency spectrum. Many pencil condensers in this class can feel overly hyped, brittle, or harsh in the high end, but Peluso engineered these to deliver crisp top-end air and upper-midrange articulation without ever sacrificing natural low-end body. Whether tracking acoustic guitar in an X/Y setup, capturing the natural width of a grand piano, or placing them overhead to get punchy, realistic drum dynamics, the CEMC-6 pair translates transients with incredible speed and 3D depth.

Why We Love It

  • Modular Capsule System: While the kit ships with a matched pair of standard cardioid capsules, the CEMC-6 features a threaded modular design. You can easily swap on optional omni, wide-cardioid, or hyper-cardioid capsules, turning this pair into a complete stereo recording solution for any room or ensemble setup.
  • Essential On-Mic Controls: Each microphone features integrated onboard switches for a two-stage pad (-10dB and -20dB) and a two-position high-pass filter (75Hz and 150Hz). This makes taming proximity effect or padding down aggressive cymbals and percussion effortless right at the source.
  • Massive Headroom & Low Noise: Capable of handling up to 156dB SPL (with the -20dB pad engaged) alongside a low self-noise floor, these mics are equally adept at tracking quiet, delicate fingerpicked acoustic instruments as they are handling loud drum kits or brass.
  • Flight-Ready Stereo Package: The pair comes complete with matched microphone bodies, cardioid capsules, shock mounts, hard mounts, foam windscreens, and a heavy-duty locking flight case.

The Bottom Line

If you are looking for a studio-standard stereo pair of small-diaphragm condensers that punch far above their price tag, the Peluso CEMC-6 Matched Pair is an easy recommendation. They offer exceptional clarity, modular versatility, and a musical warmth that makes them an indispensable tool for acoustic guitars, drum overheads, piano, and orchestra tracking alike.

Manufacturer's Description from Peluso

The CEMC-6 SK ships with a cardioid pattern capsule with a 20 millimeter gold-sputtered diaphragm. Additional capsules are available in omni-directional, cardioid, and hyper-cardioid patterns. The CEMC-6 has very low self-noise. A high SPL allows it to handle very loud sources without distortion. A flat frequency response across its entire range provides a natural sound very true to your source. We achieve our balanced output with a generously sized transformer, eliminating interference and distortion. The CEMC-6 features a -10 dB and -20 dB pad switch and a two-position high pass filter with 75hz and 150hz settings. This versatile microphone is used in the studio on everything from vocals and acoustic instruments to drum overheads. For the remote recordist this is a great mic for orchestras, live audience tapers and location sound. You'll always get great results from the Peluso CEMC-6 SK, one of the most versatile and best sounding small diaphragm microphones on the market.
