The Overstayer M-A-S 8101 is not your typical compressor—and that’s exactly the point.
This is a piece built for tone shaping just as much as dynamics control, with a distinctly aggressive, character-forward personality that can bring tracks to life in a way cleaner gear simply can’t. It’s fast, punchy, and capable of serious attitude, but what makes it special is how controllable that attitude is.
The harmonic saturation and clipping options are where the 8101 really shines. You can push it into rich, dense coloration, add grit and edge, or keep things tighter and more controlled—all while shaping transients in a way that feels intentional and musical. It excels on drums, bass, and anything that benefits from a bit of authority and presence, but it’s just as useful for adding energy to stems or even a full mix when used tastefully.
Despite its bold nature, the 8101 isn’t one-dimensional. There’s a surprising range of subtlety here if you take the time to dial it in, making it a versatile tool rather than just a “smash box.”
For engineers who want more than transparent compression—who want impact, color, and flexibility—the Overstayer M-A-S 8101 delivers in a big way.
The Overstayer M-A-S was designed to be an analog ‘more’ control. More color, more harmonics, more tone. It gives you the harmonic character and peak rounding of classic recording and mixing chains in a simple, highly controllable rack-mount unit.
The limiting nature of the M-A-S stages rounds and bends peaks resulting in increased apparent volume, without the timing artifacts associated with compression. Its integrated pushbutton High and Low EQ presets, High Pass Filter and Emphasis circuits help further shape the harmonic content of source material.
Use it on the individual tracks for cumulative (console to tape like) benefits. The M-A-S can add consistency as peaks and harsh transients get smoothed and absorbed into the performance, making balancing tracks in the mix easier, and lessening the need for bus limiting down the line. Used on a full mix, the added harmonic content can energize, and add cohesiveness and detail. The Mix control allows the character to be balanced to taste.
Bring harmonics and tone to your bass, synths, drum machines and samplers with the integrated front panel high impedance input.
In 2008, Los Angeles-based musician/engineer/producer Jeff Turzo began building custom recording electronics for his personal studio. It wasn’t long until other LA-based producers caught wind of the designs. Soon, the requests for his custom recording electronics began to roll in, and in 2009, Overstayer Recording Equipment, Inc. was born.
Overstayer Recording Equipment was launched with the idea of building unique high-quality, analog circuits with vast tonal flexibility. Each Overstayer design is conceived to meet real-world needs and evolves from real-world testing. All Overstayer products are hand-made in Los Angeles, CA and offer comprehensive controls that allow users to find the ultimate balance between fidelity and color. Find out why engineers that have used Overstayer products will never again work without them.
