Sound Pure's Take

For decades now, Metro Drum Company has been creating some of the finest handcrafted drums from Australia and we are super excited to have these drums.

This Tasmanian Blackwood snare drum with flanged hoops brings a throwback flair with modern build tolerances. For this beauty, the Metro company used a ply shell without reinforcing rings and finished it with a natural satin over an attractive Rosewood veneer.  Blackwood is an acacia wood species that comes from Australia, New Zealand, or Tasmania and is sometimes compared to Hawaiian koa. Being close to 20% harder than maple, its tonal range is similar to both koa and mahogany, featuring a strong midrange focus that is dry, clear and warm, with a splash of top-end shimmer. The Tasmanian Blackwood coupled with the 10 lug configuration bring a soothing warmth that we fell in love with.

This is just one of the many options that Metro Drum Company has available. Whether you prefer modern builds or vintage sounds, give us a call and get on the road to sonic and visual bliss.

From Metro Drums

The Metro ply shell snare is both dynamic and articulate. These drums have the characteristic volume and projection of the best steel shells, but with a warmth and depth that no metal shell can capture. An expressive instrument with an open, lively sound, these ply shell snare drums respond instantly to even the most subtle stickings.

Tasmanian Blackwood’s tone profile resembles that of koa or mahogany in its midrange focus — a little dry and clear yet also warm — with an added splash of top-end shimmer and richness found in rosewood.
