Manley Stereo ELOP Electro-Optical Compressor/Limiter - Used  From Manley

The Manley ELOP is a tracking staple for the studio. Its quick grab tames vocals while the gentle slow release characteristic keeps it natural like a hand on a fader. Unique for this type of limiter, high frequency extension is retained even when digging deep. Built rugged and reliable, the Manley ELOP is often seen FOH on the superstar’s lead vocal at concerts all over the world. In Used, Excellent condition

What We Think

The ELOP is one of those processors that offers beauty in both sound and simplicity of design. With only two main controls (Make Up Gain and Gain Reduction) it’s pretty hard to mess this limiter up. Because of this and it's relatively fast attack (for an electro-optical limiter), the ELOP is one of the best options I’ve used when tracking vocals, guitars, and bass. There it serves as a smooth and responsive audio leveler by effortlessly controlling louder peaks, resulting in a more even and full performance with a touch of Manley’s famous tube polish.

Oh, and don’t let the “limiter” title scare you. While having a higher ratio that technically qualifies as limiting, the applications where you’d use ELOP overlap with where you’d use a traditional compressor, as opposed to solely mix buss or mastering purposes. Meticulous detail went into designing the ELOP to be a powerful yet forgiving and easy to use box - essentially it’d take some serious determination to make the ELOP sound bad!
This particular unit has recently been evaluated by the manufacturer and returned to premium working condition.

Manufacturer's Description from Manley

Set it and forget it! Our ELOP® Limiters make your job easy. The principle of operation is based around using a rectified sample of the audio to shine an LED (Light Emitting Diode) onto an LDR (Light Dependent Resistor). The photo-resistor in combination with a fixed resistor simply act as a changing voltage divider to attenuate the signal-- like a smart volume control. A similar principle was found in the older **Teletronix & Urei **LA-2A, LA-3, and LA-4 units which used a slower electro-luminescent panel-light on a conventional LDR encased in a light-tight enclosure. Ours uses modern VACTROL technology (but with a trick!) for exact sample-to-sample tracking and no high frequency loss while digging deep into limiting-- problems commonly associated with older LA-series limiters and other opto-based units.

The audio signal passes only through our super-clean single-ended vacuum tube line amplifiers in the Manley unit, and through all-discrete Class A amplifiers in the Langevin version. Each channel can be run separately or switched to stereo - link . Due to their inherently quick attack, these Electro-Optical Limiters are skilled soldiers for tracking vocals or individual instruments, although now with the addition of a very useful sidechain high-pass filter that can switch between 100Hz or 200Hz (or OUT) to allow the limiter to ignore heavy bass lines, the ELOP® limiter is proving more useful for modern urban music where you dont want the limiter only responding to the loudest thing i.e., the BIG bass. If you want the bass line to leave the rest of the mix alone, then this switch is for you!

SPECIAL MASTERING VERSIONS AVAILABLE TO ORDER

Mastering versions of any of our limiters and equalizers incorporating detented and logable 1/2dB steps built with 1% metal film resistors on sealed gold-contact Grayhill switches may be custom ordered for an additional $500 NET per channel. Normal units may not be converted.

Manley Laboratories Inc

About Manufacturer

The MANLEY brand has been around since the late 1980's. Manley's first commercially available products were upper echelon high-fidelity vacuum tube amplifiers and preamplifiers constructed at the old Vacuum Tube Logic of America factory.

In this history lesson, we'd like to direct special focus on our people at Manley Labs. The people whose years of dedication, service, and expertise bring you people, our customers, these products. It's all about the people...

On January 30, 1989, a 20 year old EveAnna on sabbatical from her studies at Columbia University met the crew and was hired on to the production team. Baltazar Hernandez, already with two years experience, taught her how to solder in those first few days. It was in 1989 that the first Manley professional products were developed, starting with the original 1u Reference 60dB Microphone Preamplifier and soon followed by our Manley Enhanced Pultec and Mid Frequency Equalizers. Baltazar and EveAnna, busy building gear, were soon joined by Saulo and Ramiro. Just next door, Elias was employed by a printed circuit board maker later brought into the Manley Labs fold when in 1993, Manley Laboratories, Inc. became a separate entity apart from VTL. The new Manley Labs factory at 13880 Magnolia Ave. in beautiful and bovine Chino, California was outfitted to house the Manley HiFi and Pro Studio manufacturing as well as the Langevin production lines, our newly acquired machine shop, and printed circuit board facilities.
