Sound Pure's Take

The Manley Nu Mu is one of those rare compressors that feels as much like an instrument as it does a piece of outboard gear.

At its core, it’s a variable mu design, but with a level of control and flexibility that makes it far more versatile than most in that category. It can be smooth and transparent, gently shaping dynamics in a way that feels almost invisible—or it can lean into its tube character, adding density, glue, and a sense of weight that’s hard to replicate any other way.

What really stands out is how effortlessly the Nu Mu handles mix bus and mastering duties. It has that unmistakable ability to “pull things together,” enhancing cohesion without flattening the life out of a mix. The blend control and sidechain options make it easy to dial in exactly the right amount of compression, whether you’re going for subtle polish or a more pronounced effect.

And then there’s the tone. There’s a richness and dimensionality here that only great tube gear delivers—never muddy, never overhyped, just bigger and more finished in a way that feels natural.

For engineers looking for a high-end compressor that combines classic tube warmth with modern control, the Nu Mu is a standout. It’s the kind of piece you put across a mix and immediately miss when it’s gone.

From Manley Laboratories Inc

Featuring Manley’s new HIP function, the Manley Nu Mu finesses dynamic control to bring up lower level details without knocking the life out of exciting transients. Smartly engineered to build efficiently and aesthetically designed to elicit ravishing compliments from your clients, both visually and ergonomically, the Manley Nu Mu breaks new ground in performance and value, all proudly hand built in California, of course!

“HIP” Control

The “HIP” control allows compression to happen at lower volumes (lower in the dynamic range spectrum, but leaves
the louder dynamics alone while still compressing the overall signal. You get louder soft sections with the original dynamics of the louder sections.

Features:

  • Manley IRON® input transformers
  • 4 x hand-matched 6BA6 vacuum tubes
  • Balanced XLR inputs & outputs
  • Manley HIP function raises soft dynamics without squashing louder passages
  • High Voltage Switched Mode Power Supply custom designed for our vacuum tube audio circuits
