Until you've played a Kanile'a, you haven't really played a Ukulele. This one in particular has the warmth and magic of the islands in its tone. The grain is devastatingly beautiful (it's all upgraded curly Koa) and the palm tree inlay is so intricate it looks 3-dimensional. If you haven't seen this grade of Koa up-close, take a good hard look at these pictures...tell me it doesn't remind you of sunlight reflecting off the ocean.
The first thing you'll notice is how solid and taut it feels compared to the "toys" that are often passed off as Ukes. This is a real joy to play. Give it a strum and notice how full, round and clear each note sounds. Incredible definition. There's nothing less than professional about this instrument. The neck profile is big enough to get a grip on and very comfortable.
“Concert” is my favorite size. It’s bigger than tenors and sopranos, and thus has more headroom, but it’s still tuned GCEA. In my opinion, you need that high string before the low ones to really get the Uke sound.
Ukuleles are in many ways the perfect instrument and I don’t think any musician should be without one. No matter where you’re going, your Uke wants to come. Chord progressions, single string melodies, vocal accompaniment, rhythm in an ensemble. A Uke can handle it all. Even if that "6th" chord sound is too tropical for you, just play with the tuners a little and figure out something you like!
