Sound Pure's Take

The Josephson C42 Matched Pair is one of those microphone sets that has quietly earned a cult following among engineers who care more about results than hype.

At first listen, what stands out is the clarity. The C42s have an incredibly fast, detailed response that captures the attack and nuance of a source without sounding sterile or clinical. There’s a subtle presence lift on top that adds sparkle and definition, but it’s done in a way that feels musical rather than exaggerated.

What really makes these microphones special, though, is how well they work as a stereo pair. Whether you're recording acoustic guitar, piano, drum overheads, percussion, choir, or room ambience, they deliver a focused, coherent stereo image that feels natural and dimensional. The matched pair configuration ensures consistency between microphones, which translates into excellent imaging and balance.

On drum overheads, the C42s have become something of a secret weapon. They capture cymbal detail beautifully while maintaining definition in the rest of the kit. Acoustic instruments benefit from that same sense of articulation—the pick attack on a guitar, the transient detail of a piano, or the texture of a string section all come through with impressive realism.

There's also a refreshing honesty to the sound. The transformerless Class A design keeps things clean and open, allowing the character of the instrument, room, and performer to come through without unnecessary coloration.

What we appreciate most about the C42 pair is that they don't try to impress you with size or hype. Instead, they excel at capturing sources accurately while still adding just enough excitement on the top end to help recordings sit beautifully in a mix.

For engineers looking for a stereo pair that combines precision, musicality, and exceptional versatility, the Josephson C42s remain one of the most underrated small-diaphragm condensers available—and a pair you'll find yourself reaching for again and again.

This pair of microphones are in perfect working order but do have a couple of cosmetic blemishes that prevent them from being mint.

From Josephson Engineering

The Josephson Engineering C42 is an all-purpose cardioid condenser microphone suitable for multiple recording applications including spot miking acoustic and amplified instruments, drums and drum overheads, ensemble and choir pickups, concert recording, sound effects and vocals. Standard C42 microphones are satin machined stainless steel for years of rugged use.

C42 electronics feature a selected discrete FET driving a fully balanced symmetrical transformerless discrete class-A output stage. The output impedance is low enough that very long cable runs may be used without signal degradation. Although the microphone is specified for full P48 phantom power, it will function with phantom power as low as 24 volts, with some limitation in maximum SPL.

The C42MP includes a matched pair of C42 microphones in matte black chrome finish and a protective hard shell case.
