"I call it my "Number One" or "Desert Island" guitar because it's by far the best guitar I've ever owned, held or heard." Those are the words Mike Slubowski used to describe his prized 1959 'Burst, serial #9 1918, and the latest original to be replicated through Gibson Custom's Collector's Choice series. As the name implies, each Collector's Choice is a specific excample of one of the few original 1959 Les Paul models still in existence and accessible through the generosity of their current owners. "Number One" according to the Gibson Custom team who analyzed the guitar's exact specificications in a series of hand's on sessions, is a pristine example of a guitar whose sixty-plus years have been lived out in a gentle quiet. It still retains much of the deep cherry red in its finish. In fact, the only evidence that it was exposed to light at some point is a dark, sales tag shaped portion of the finish. The particular finish of #9 1918 is rare with only a handful made during the brief period in which Gibson originally produced the 1959 Les Paul model.
Today's Gibson electric guitars represent the history as well as the future of the electric guitar. The models whose designs have become classics-the ES-175, ES-335, Flying V, Explorer, Firebird, SGs and Les Pauls-are a testament to Gibson's wide appeal, spanning more than four decades of music styles. Gibson's close relationship with musicians is manifest in endorsement models from King, Atkins and jazz greats Howard Roberts and Herb Ellis, plus new Les Pauls made to the personal specifications of rock stars Jimmy Page and Joe Perry. In 1994, Gibson's Centennial year, the new Nighthawk model won an industry award for design, setting the stage for a second hundred years of Gibson quality and innovation.
