What We Think

Condition: Used, Very Good. This instrument was made in 1935 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and has repaired cracks, a neck reset, and a number of other cosmetic features and repairs that should be nothing less than expected of a 90+ year old instrument. This guitar has had extensive work performed upon it by our luthier, and the stability of these repairs has been verified.

SP Luthier Notes: Cracks were present on the back, top and side(s) of the guitar. As such our luthier stabilized, filled, and refinished the affected area(s) leaving them in a much healthier condition. The neck joint had naturally shifted over time leaving much to be desired of the guitar's action. Our luthier removed the neck then reset the neck joint to perfect factory condition. The frets as they were could not be repaired to an acceptable state so they were replaced with spec accurate fretwire and shaped into near mint condition. No further work was required.

This is a really special guitar. Pre-war flat tops of any kind, from brands big and small have a delightfully handmade and simple charm about them, and this piece is no different. Spruce and Mahogany construction make for a beautifully transparent sound, and thanks to the age of the instrument it's wonderfully projective and loud without any mud, and is just about as clear and dry as you could get. It isn't a jumbo acoustic, but it cuts through noise better than most jumbo acoustics. At 90 years old, we wish we knew the stories it could tell! And, thanks to our luthier's very extensive work on this guitar, it plays like it's brand new. It's got fight and bark in it, and the charm of this guitar above all else is that it's honest and simple. We love it, and you shouldn't miss it!

About Manufacturer

Today's Gibson electric guitars represent the history as well as the future of the electric guitar. The models whose designs have become classics-the ES-175, ES-335, Flying V, Explorer, Firebird, SGs and Les Pauls-are a testament to Gibson's wide appeal, spanning more than four decades of music styles. Gibson's close relationship with musicians is manifest in endorsement models from King, Atkins and jazz greats Howard Roberts and Herb Ellis, plus new Les Pauls made to the personal specifications of rock stars Jimmy Page and Joe Perry. In 1994, Gibson's Centennial year, the new Nighthawk model won an industry award for design, setting the stage for a second hundred years of Gibson quality and innovation.
