It can be smooth and transparent, aggressive and punchy, vintage-inspired, or completely over the top depending on how you set it. Dave Derr designed it with the sonic influences of classics like the 1176, LA-2A, and Gain Brain in mind, but the end result became something entirely its own.
The EL-8X version takes an already versatile compressor and adds some of the most sought-after features in the Distressor lineup. British Mode delivers the famous "all-buttons-in" style compression associated with vintage 1176 units, creating explosive room mics, aggressive drum sounds, and larger-than-life parallel compression. It's one of those settings that can instantly turn a good track into an exciting one.
As a stereo pair, these units become even more impressive. The Image Link feature helps maintain a stable stereo image while compressing stereo sources, making them just as comfortable across a mix bus, drum bus, or stereo room microphones as they are on individual tracks. The Empirical Labs EL-8X Distressor Stereo Pair combines two of the most versatile and widely respected compressors in professional audio into a factory-matched stereo configuration designed for tracking, mixing, and bus processing applications.
Originally designed by Dave Derr, the Distressor has become a modern studio standard by blending the flexibility and sonic characteristics of several classic compressor designs into a single, highly adaptable unit. The EL-8X version expands upon the original Distressor platform with the addition of British Mode and advanced stereo image linking capabilities.
Each Distressor features a fully analog signal path with digitally controlled circuitry, offering precise control over dynamics while maintaining the warmth, punch, and musicality associated with vintage analog equipment. Variable attack and release controls, multiple compression ratios, detector shaping options, and selectable distortion modes allow the EL-8X to cover a wide range of applications—from transparent level control to aggressive, character-rich compression.
The integrated Distortion 2 and Distortion 3 modes introduce second- and third-order harmonic content, allowing users to add tube-like warmth, tape-style saturation, or enhanced harmonic complexity directly within the compressor. About Manufacturer
Empirical Labs Inc. (ELI), designs and produces professional audio equipment and software. This includes equipment used in recording studios, live sound, broadcast studios and other audio production facilities etc. We also make software for digital signal processors. Most of you are here because you have heard about or used our Distressor. This product, which is our first hardware product, was designed in 1994, tested and revised for several years, and released in early 1996. The Distressor is the first in a series of audio products from ELI that will offer original features, ease of use, long product life, and a very musical audio path. Empirical Labs was started in 1988 and functioned mainly as a recording studio and electronics consulting firm. The founder, Dave Derr, was also employed at the time by Eventide as an audio engineer. Dave was part of the core design team for the H3000, H3500, and DSP4000. His experience at Eventide proved valuable for his later work. While working alongside Ken Bogdanowicz and Bob Belcher (both now at Wave Mechanics), Dave was exposed to great engineering and the modern world of digital signal processing (DSP).

- Dynamic Range – 110 dB from max. output to min. output in 1:1 mode. Greater than 100 dB signal to noise in distort 3 mode.
- Distortion – ranges between .02% and 20% depending on distortion mode and release times set on front panel.

- Time Constants – Attack range 50uS – 50mS. Release range .05 sec to 3.5 seconds, normal modes and up to 20 seconds in 10:1 opto mode. Time constants are dependent on ratio.
