Sound Pure's Take

Condition: Used, Very Good

A charming, classy, and highly inviting archtop from a self described "lone artisan" who built through 2006.  Lester DeVoe's custom work always exhibited a priority of tone and feel over museum quality noveltly and exotic pricing--that ethos shines here in this bright, perky archtop.  Plenty of sweetness in the highs, plenty of punch in the mids, plenty of taut, tight control in the bass.  Light to begin with, this played in instrument feels like it plays itself when its in the case!  Rare gem, folks, grab it while you can!

From Other (Miscellanous Used/Vintage/Consign)

Standard models are produced with the same select-grade spruce (top) and figured maple (back and sides) as my custom models.  The fingerboard and fittings (bridge, tailpiece, fingerrest) are of ebony.  The body and f-holes are bound in your choice of black or white plastic with the headstock left unbound.  The fingerboard is bound in its own wood to conceal the fret slots and provide a very clean look.  Standard models are available in natural (clear nitrocellulose lacquer) or with a stain-over sunburst (any color) for no extra charge.  On white-bound sunburst instruments, there is an additional charge of $200 for those who prefer the body bindings to be scraped clean of stain.  See the pricing page for a list of options available for the standard models.

Although my archtop designs are rooted in tradition, I still strive to improve upon traditional design elements.  My bridge design is one example of this effort.  What’s different about my bridge?  It’s the pins...or should I say the tubes.  In place of solid bridge pins, I use ¼” tubing into which I die-cut adjustment threads.  My hollow pins have several advantages, including, more surface area to provide better contact between the bridge top and foot, less weight, and the complete elimination of bulky thumbwheel adjusters.  The results are a streamlined look and better transmission of string energy from bridge to top plate.
