This guitar has a full, woody tone with some great punchiness. This is truly a great buy for the price. The spruce top and ebony fretboard combination (the 'ES' in 'GCS-1ES') is absolutely killer for some of the warmer, rounder tones you might expect from a full hollowbody, but with the clarity and focus of a semi-hollow guitar. The smooth ebony fretboard also contributes to a creamy but detailed sound that lends itself very well to chord melody and colorful harmonies. Bill Comins always provides these instruments with the same setup and fretwork that adorns his higher-end archtops, and as a result the GCS-1s share the same exceptional level of playability. The GCS-1ES is of the same design as the GCS-1 although the fingerboard and top wood has been replaced with Ebony and Spruce respectively. This configuration tailors the instrument more specifically toward warmer/darker/thicker jazz tones.
The GCS-1 is a solidly built semi-hollow guitar designed for musicians looking for a well-made practical and roadworthy musical instrument. Inherently versatile, it can produce a myriad of tonalities suitable for blues, rock, country, and jazz playing. It adorns a laminated flame Maple top with a laminated Sapele back, and the sides/internal block structure are routed from a solid wood core. This design yields a balanced and even articulation with enhanced sustain characteristics. Included is a TKL hard-shell case. A version with a U.S. made Bigsby vibrato is also available.
One of the finest archtop builders in the world, Bill Comins produces instruments of unsurpassed quality. His attention to every detail is immediately evident when you pick up and play one of his guitars. Bill brings the complete package: tone, looks, playability, and craftsmanship. While his instruments pay homage to traditional designs, they also have that unique “Comins” character… warm, fat, and mellow with tone for days. Recently, he has taken his art and expertise to the world of solid-body electric guitars, and been creating some new gems in that arena that are simply to die for. His works are masterpiece collectibles designed to stand up to the test of time.
