What We Think

Discover intimate warmth, exceptional projection, and boutique artistry with the Bourgeois DE-Hogtop! Weighing a featherlight 3 lbs 14 oz, this all-mahogany instrument pairs a select mahogany top with matching mahogany back and sides to deliver a focused, woody tone with dry midrange clarity, rich sustain, and sweet harmonic balance. The headstock boasts an elegant Ziricote veneer fitted with precision Der Jung tuning machines, while the smooth ebony fingerboard is appointed with vintage-style mother of pearl dot inlays and sleek black binding. Finished in a dazzling high gloss with an ebony belly bridge (2.2" spacing), a three-ring ivoroid rosette, and ebony bridge pins, this acoustic comes complete with a deluxe hardshell case, offering a versatile playing experience perfectly suited for both intricate fingerstyle and expressive flatpicking.

Manufacturer's Description from Bourgeois

Warmth, straight up. Rich, woody tone that speaks for itself.

The Downeast Series 00 Hogtop punches above its weight. Ergonomically friendly yet surprisingly robust, the short scale 14 fret 00 delivers a focused, intimate sound, versatile enough for fingerstyle or strumming, and a great partner for songwriting or just hanging around and noodling.

Mahogany is an ideal wood for the 00 body size. Though traditionally considered a “budget tonewood”, its warm tonality and full midrange response favorably compliments smaller bodied guitars. And while mahogany tops can sometimes sound drier or flatter than their spruce counterparts, a “hogtop” crafted using Bourgeois’ unique voicing method consistently produces a full palette of resonant frequencies, delivering singing, sustaining trebles, rich midrange, and balanced bass.

Bourgeois Guitars

About Manufacturer

Bourgeois Guitars are defining the future of vintage tone, combining old-world hand-voicing techniques with modern innovations in design and materials. Built in a ca. 1850s mill in the industrial town of Lewiston Maine, master luthier Dana Bourgeois and his small team of highly skilled craftsman produce some of the finest steel-string instruments available today.

Known for tonal excellence, meticulous craftsmanship and top-notch materials, they are played by six-string luminaries such as Bryan Sutton, Ricky Skaggs, Sean Watkins, Della Mae, the late Doc Watson and countless professional and nonprofessional enthusiasts. Bourgeois guitars have had a prominent role in the American steel-string guitar renaissance for more than two decades, helping shape acoustic music’s most recent rise in popularity.
