We'll put this 18 style dread up against anything out there, period. Playability is comfortable and power is immediate with this one. Clear, aggressive bass; punchy, woody mids; sweet (not too bright!) sustaining trebles. Glorious! This Hoss has clearly seen some honest play over the past 10+ years (for good reason) and, after a thorough servicing from our luthier, is ready for much, much more. That incredibly thin finish has picked up some checking over the years but, aside from a vintage-y look, has had no effect on the health of the guitar. There are vintage guitars out there that don't sound like this thing--don't miss it!
Condition: Used, Very Good (finish checking)
Our luthier performed the following on this instrument: refret the 1st 5, saddle adjustment, setup, side crack repair
Jim Merrill has been repairing and restoring stringed instruments full time since 1981. After gaining a solid reputation of detailed craftsmanship, and because Jim approached his work as a restoration and not just another repair, he had the opportunity to work on some of the rarest and most highly prized guitars in the world.
With great curiosity as to why these guitars were so special, Jim started to keep a file of materials, measurements, thicknesses, and all of the details of construction that made these guitar's great.
In late 1999, Jim had the opportunity to build his own line of guitar's full time. He decided to emulate the builders who's workmanship defined the American acoustic guitar. Using basic hand tools and lutherie methods born from a century of fine guitar building, the Merrill Guitar was born.
