What We Think

Condition: Used, Excellent

What can we say? "The Fern" is a masterful instrument that need not compete with other models--the others are made in light of it! This particular picking-fiddle has more bark than an old tree. Its voice is dry and sweet as spring air. It's smooth enough to sing acapella, but sits beautifully in a jam, too. We did a little picking in the showroom just now and the tone on this lovely F-5L stood out like the star on top on a Christmas tree. It plays like buttered water and has a burst that reminds me of a southern sunset. A marvelous instrument through and through.

Manufacturer's Description from Gibson Guitars

F-5L The Fern

The F-5L, introduced in 1978, marked the beginning of a return to the specifications of Lloyd Loar's original F-5 Master Model mandolins of 1922-24. Today's F-5 sets the standard by which all other mandolins are judged.

About Manufacturer

Today's Gibson electric guitars represent the history as well as the future of the electric guitar. The models whose designs have become classics-the ES-175, ES-335, Flying V, Explorer, Firebird, SGs and Les Pauls-are a testament to Gibson's wide appeal, spanning more than four decades of music styles. Gibson's close relationship with musicians is manifest in endorsement models from King, Atkins and jazz greats Howard Roberts and Herb Ellis, plus new Les Pauls made to the personal specifications of rock stars Jimmy Page and Joe Perry. In 1994, Gibson's Centennial year, the new Nighthawk model won an industry award for design, setting the stage for a second hundred years of Gibson quality and innovation.
