What We Think

Condition: Used, Good

Weight = 7.5 lbs.

I consider myself very fortunate to have a job that allows me to play all sorts of amazing guitars on a regular basis, but every now and then one comes along that shakes me to my very core. That's certainly the case with this vintage ES-345. Sure, it's done some living in its 54 years, but don't think for a second that it's lacking in any respect. This is a smooth-as-butter tone monster! It's light and comfortable to play, but still has a substantial feel to it. Switching among the different pickup positions, I was treated to all of the tasty tones that you'd expect a guitar like this to crank out: bright, punchy, throaty, you name it. No matter where you're playing on the fretboard, the notes seem to jump out on their own, responding perfectly to every change in attack and articulation. This is truly a unique instrument, you can practically feel the history in every aspect of its flawless design!

Having had a blues based background playing-wise, I've always loved the ES Style Gibsons. Most of my heros have played these instruments over the years: BB King, Freddie King, Eric Clapton, Elvin Bishop, Shuggie Otis, Duane Allman and Dickey Betts on the blues and blues/rock side of things. Not to mention the studio guys that loved the versatility of the semi hollow guitars: Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Lee Ritenour, and John Leventhal, just to name a few!

The '61 ES-3445 that we have is absolutely killing me. She has that warm round tone but with enough bite to do all the head cuttin' you need. :)

This one is not all original but has all that old wood which is obviously "the tone generator." The neck profile is on the thinner side which makes her very easy to play and she sounded great with every amp she was teamed up with.

- Eddie

From original owner:

"This guitar was obtained from the original owner's son, who enlisted Pete Petty to help part out his Dad's collection to cover medical expenses. The original owner sent this guitar back to Gibson in the mid-70's to have it refinished (the original finish was also cherry.) In order to raise funds for the Dad's expenses, Pete "parted out" the saleable items (Bigsby, PAFs, ABR-1.) The guitar was an original "custom plaque" Bigsby model so stud holes had been drilled at the factory when originally built. Pete converted the remaining guitar to 335 specs."
