What We Think

Whether you're using a flat-pick or fingers, this dread is so chocked full of glorious overtones that you can hear them ringing like church bells in the background of every note. Yet the fundamental is strong, woody, and true. It cuts through the swell beautifully. Simple melodies become symphonies when poured through this magical instrument. Some wood is already haunted by music.

Aesthetically, it's an understated stunner. Clear, clean, and perfectly detailed. I love the faint, symmetrical dark streaks in the neatly grained German top. The warm rosewood stripes. The Ziricote headstock looks like it's in motion. The purfling is subtle and frames everything very well.

10/10. This is a dangerous guitar.

Manufacturer's Description from Bourgeois

Dreadnought
14 FRET, 25.5" SCALE
Power, Fullness, headroom, and tradition.

Our most popular model, the square shoulder pre-War style Dreadnought delivers ample power to cut through any performance situation. Featuring Dana's unique, single-scalloped X braced system, our Dreadnought has become a bluegrass classic, offering a blend of balance and clarity absolutely required for flatpicking, highly desirable for most other styles of playing, but rarely found in a contemporary dreadnought.

Overview:

Inspired by the clean, simple lines of our Soloist, the Classic package is elegant and understated. We start with the highest grade of East Indian rosewood and pair it with a fine European spruce top to create a guitar that responds well to a light to medium touch. Typically creamy white in color, European spruce is not as stiff as Adirondack and offers slightly less headroom. It has great harmonic complexity and is often ringy and bell-like. Great for fingerstyle and for exacting techniques. We use the best of what we find, German, Italian or Alpine and occasionally others such as Carpathian spruce. The Classic package includes a simple wood rosette, our arrowhead backstrip, Black & Maple Soloist purfling, Abalone Squares & Diamonds and crowned with Gold Waverly tuners with simple Ebony buttons.

About Manufacturer

Bourgeois Guitars are defining the future of vintage tone, combining old-world hand-voicing techniques with modern innovations in design and materials. Built in a ca. 1850s mill in the industrial town of Lewiston Maine, master luthier Dana Bourgeois and his small team of highly skilled craftsman produce some of the finest steel-string instruments available today.

Known for tonal excellence, meticulous craftsmanship and top-notch materials, they are played by six-string luminaries such as Bryan Sutton, Ricky Skaggs, Sean Watkins, Della Mae, the late Doc Watson and countless professional and nonprofessional enthusiasts. Bourgeois guitars have had a prominent role in the American steel-string guitar renaissance for more than two decades, helping shape acoustic music’s most recent rise in popularity.
