How to Pack Pro Audio Gear

What you’ll need

  • Packing tape – Moving or packing tape is preferred, Things like duct tape, electrical tape, other tape may not hold on to the box well enough during shipping.
  • Scrap cardboard or foam – This will be used to insulate the gear from the inside of the box. Lots of things can happen between A to B, so you’ll want plenty of padding to keep your gear safe
  • Bubble wrap – This is essential for shipping things safely, you’ll want to get plenty. Most stores have this in the moving section.
  • Packing paper – Sturdy paper that has no ink or glue for wrapping items. Temperature or humidity changes can cause things to melt or run onto your gear, so this is why we recommend NOT to use newsprint as insulating material.

What’s the first step?

Pro Audio gear comes in all shapes and sizes, but the principles are the same. Weather there’s a protective case, bag, whatever it may be, it is important to make sure any loose parts, or anything that can potentially be damaged be wrapped up and secure. Packing material wedged throughout helps keep everything safe.  It’s a good idea to keep small parts together, bagged up or taped together for ease of access later on. all cables, boxes, everything should be secure and easy to find, so that nothing gets lost in shipping.

Next steps

Once you have everything together, secure, and ready to go in a box, you’ll need to make sure things can survive the trip. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 2 inches of foam, bubble wrap, or other gear-safe packaging material on all sides of the item(s). Things also might rub against each other in transit, so it’s a good idea to insulate things from each other as well. Scratches can appear on items that are left to vibrate against each other during transit.
